Freddy owns around 250 bootlegged films that we call Felículas. Among this movies, are some of the best (and worst) movies I've ever seen and since 2007 they have offered a different view of world cinema to me (thanks to them I've seen Korean, Japanese, French and German movies).

The debate against bootlegging can easily be solved by going through the list of available Felículas, since most of them are movies that never got to be shown in the MX big screens or are impossible to get in DVD (either for the lack of availability or because of the ridiculous price).

So, if you want to come over and kill some time, just pick one of the titles of the (weekly growing) list and join us for the Sunday Movie Afternoon @ Fedeslavia (a timeless tradition that has recently grown on me).

Meaningful Learning

When Jamal Malik, took the stage in the Indian version of "Who wants to be a millionaire" he knew all but two of the answers. How come? Every moment in his life was a key to every answer, everything he went through in 18 years of life helped him to answer each question. Why? Because as Confucious said: I do I learn.

Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle's latest film is a good example of how experience helps in our learning process. Jamal, the protagonist of the film, never went to school but lived a lot of different things while growing up and before taking part of the show.

The other important factor to his winning: destiny. Maybe, maybe sometimes things are really written. Maybe sometimes all it takes is a little leap of faith or a little touch of luck. What isn't a matter of luck is that this was a great movie and what is, is that every time I go to Cineteca, something strange happens with the film (at least the last 3 times, that's why I don't go there anymore).

But don't forget to watch Slumdog Millionaire and keep on living your lives, because maybe someday, all your experience will make you win 20 million rupees.

Everything you know is in 3D

,

I went to see U23D and I really enjoyed it. It's been a while since I saw a 3D movie and I have to say that the exeperience is awesome. There are certain shots that make the band seem like they're jumping off the screen or that you can really touch Bono.

Critics from various publications felt that the film's 3-D experience created an environment that felt more real than being at an actual U2 concert by stating that it was "even better than the real thing", a reference to U2's song of the same name. Reviews stated the film seemed appealing to both fan and non-fans of U2, just as the filmmakers had originally intended.

I recommend it! And also, if you have the chance, watch Rattle and Hum on a movie theatre

Lost in translation

I'm writing this post with a roll of sushi in one hand and half a litre of Heine in the other (ok, I put them down to write). At first I wasn't interested in the work of Sofia -daddy's girl- Coppola until I was almost forced by Federico to watch her movies.

The first one I saw was the Suicide Virgins and a few weeks later Marie Antoinette and today I finally finished watching Lost in Translation (I started watching it at work, but today I finished... I've been very distracted with the Ghibli movies) and I really liked it.

After watching Lost in Translation all I wanted to do was visiting Tokyo and eat Japanese food. I have a crush on Japan.

I really loved the premise of the film, how strange can you feel in a place where no one speaks your language or you really can't understand what's happening around you. You sometimes need a partner to be with you while you both explore this new, different world and in the end you obviously end up bonding.

Ok, I'm just being random and this Heine is not going to drink itself so, watch her movies, watch her daddy's movies and if you can avoid it, don't watch most of her cousin's movies!

V for Vendetta

,

The first time I read the comic of V for Vendetta was about 3 or 4 years ago, a friend of mine handed it over to me in jpg. I read it and then lost it, I guess I had to format my Windows computer or something of the such. It was later made into a great movie by the Wachowski Brothers.

Some comic purists my think that is a bad movie, in fact it is a rather close adaptation made for the screen with great visuals and performances. It became one of my favorite movies (and comics) because it has a lot of the elements I like from readings like 1984.

Some weeks ago, I saw V for Vendetta a couple of times in HBO and after looking for my digital comic, I decided to order a hardcopy on Amazon, which arrived today. It's a great format, all the comics in one single pulp paper book. Along with Freaks of the Heartland and 28 Days Later: the aftermath, is now on the shelf of my most treasured comics.

Go Speed, Go!

Bashed by the critics and despised by Federico, Speed Racer is the (not at all) little movie that could.

Shot entirely against a green screen (like 300 and Sin City) and directed by the creators of The Matrix and V for Vendetta, shows a really colorful and sweet film making style. I grew up watching the Speed Racer anime (Meteoro in spanish) and even my aunt was in love with X Racer and as I grew up, I saw some of the latest series and even the Fairly Odd Parents' parody.

All I have to say is that, despite being quite different from The Matrix, manages to tell an anime ciberpunk story pretty well: our hero beats a corrupt super company that had control over the racing world in a retro-futuristic environment. It is visually engaging and let me tell you that, like a kid, I was very excited by the final secuence of this film that has it all, action, fights, racing, visual effects and even cheesy romantic moments.

It really left me with a smile on my face, the Wachowski Brothers did it again ^_^

No fate

Today V was here and since we were both feeling ill, we slept all afternoon. After we woke up and had our salmon meal, we started watching TV and catched Terminator 2 on Fox. Vi said that it is one of her all time favorites and we saw it.

Who can forget all those clique prhases like "come with me if you want to live" and "hasta la vista, baby".

I was telling her that I have seen T2 a lot of times since it first opened in '91 at the theater, on beta, on tv, etc, but I never saw "Terminator 3" and I recall watching "The Terminator" about 3 times as a whole. I can't even remember the plot, but one thing I remember all to well is the closing scene, when Sarah Connor hits the road on her Jeep, it always leaves me with a sense of desolation, just as when she carves "no fate" into a table.

Anyway, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which narrates the events after T2, will become an I-want-to-see-series once I see T1 and T3. I think we'll have to call Fedeslavia... After I find the movie that in Spanish was called "El Tercer Dragón" and I saw with my dad at Cineteca many years ago.

The ultimate road movie

Today I went downtown to buy a book for my dad and a memory chip for my server. I was looking around at the Ghandi bookstore when I found something I had never seen alive before: an original DVD of Wim Wenders' Until the End of the World.

How much would you pay for an original, imported, region 2 DVD? Amazon says you should pay 28.99 USDL or up. Considering that it's about what I've payed for imports sounds good to me. However, I only had to pay around 9 bucks for my movie. This is the 151 min. theatrical release, not the 279 min. director's cut bootleged version Fede got for me.

Set in an alternate 1999, UTEOTW presents a world living under the threat of quiet anihilation as a nuclear satellite spirals out of its orbit and back to Earth.

The ultimate road movie which was surpassed by its soundtrack.
