Striker nets brace at Upton Park as Liverpool edge Hammers in thriller

, , ,

Fernando Torres scored his fourth and fifth goal of the Premier League campaign as the Merseysiders beat West Ham 3-2 in a rollercoaster game. A wonderful opener from the Spaniard put the Reds ahead on the 20 minute mark. The striker cruised past two defenders before driving the ball past Green. The keeper was beaten at his near post, but there was very little he could do to stop Torres’ effort.

Diamanti equalised from the spot for the Hammers, before Kuyt regained the lead for Reds four minutes before the break. Cole headed an equaliser for West Ham on 45 minutes as both sides went in level at the break 2-2.

Just one goal was scored in the second-half and the honours went to Torres. The striker out-jumped West Ham’s central defenders to brilliantly head past Robert Green for the winner.

West Ham had the first chance of the game after Jamie Carragher was caught in possession by Zavon Hines. The attacker’s effort beat Pepe Reina, but luckily for Liverpool the ball struck the inside of the post before being cleared to safety.

At the other end Fernando Torres found Yossi Benayoun unmarked inside the box, but the midfielder shot straight at Robert Green in the West Ham goal.

Liverpool were looking lively and had big shout for a penalty turned down after a Fernando Torres shot struck Herita Llunga’s arm. Although the Spaniard’s effort was goalbound the referee gave the West Ham player the benefit of the doubt.

It was end to end stuff as Diamanti in space shot wide of Reina’s far post, and Torres had an effort fly just past wide of Green’s near post. A goal was looking ever the more likely as both teams were opting to play attacking football.

Photo: www.liverpoolfc.tvLiverpool drew first blood on 20 minutes. Fernando Torres received the ball on the edge of the area, skipped past two West Ham defenders, before drilling the ball past the West Ham keeper at his near post. It was an excellent solo goal from the number ‘9’ and his fourth in six Premier League matches.

Zola’s team’s heads didn’t drop as there persistence paid off just before the half hour mark. The referee pointed to the spot after Carragher had pushed Hines inside the area. Diamanti slipped as he took the spot-kick, but the ball still found the back of the net.

The Reds were back in front four minutes before the break. Steven Gerrard’s header from a Benayoun corner was met by Kuyt, who stabbed the ball over the line.

The lead though didn’t last long as Carlton Cole headed an equaliser for the Hammers on the stroke of half-time. The England striker flicked his header past Reina and into the back of the net.

Compared to the opening 45 minutes the second-half was slightly more subdued as chances were few and far between.

Photo: www.liverpoolfc.tvNeither keeper was called into action until the 75th minute. A cross from second-half substitute Ryan Babel was met by Torres, who sandwiched in between two defenders, managed to power a header past Green.

West Ham pushed forward in the final quarter of an hour in search of an equaliser, but unlike the first-half Liverpool looked a lot more comfortable at the back.

Fernando Torres left the pitch to a standing ovation from both the travelling Liverpool supporters and the home fans. Albert Riera came on for the forward in the final minute as the Anfield club defended their lead throughout the three minutes of injury time to claim their second away win of the season.

Torres unveils his first book amidst plenty of expectation from press and fans

Fernando Torres returned to the scene where he was officially unveiled as a new Liverpool player for the launch of his first book, ‘El Niño, My Story’. The Spain international proudly posed in the Anfield trophy room with the autobiography published by Harper Collins.

There was plenty of expectation from fans and members of the media ahead of the book presentation. The first to get a glimpse of the striker posing with his autobiography were the one hundred journalists, photographers and cameramen who packed the trophy room.

Jonathan Taylor, Publishing Director for Harper Collins, welcomed everyone present before officially unveiling the book to the media. Mr.Taylor spoke of the work and time spent developing the project and how and why ‘El Niño, My Story’ would be a hit with Torres fans worldwide.

The striker was accompanied by Antonio Sanz- an experienced journalist and Communications Director of Bahía Internacional. Antonio Sanz assisted the Liverpool and Spain striker in the writing of ‘El Niño, My Story’. Margarita Garay, the General Director of Bahía (the company that represents the forward), and Jorge Lera, Head of International Football, also attended the event alongside Fernando.

Following the presentation, Fernando Torres attended several members of the press in a series of interviews. The striker talked openly about his first book and Liverpool FC.

Next it was the turn of the fans who had been queuing outside the club shop located at the Kop End from from as early as seven in the morning. Hundreds of supporters had waited patiently for their chance to get their book personally signed by the Liverpool number ‘9’.

‘El Niño, My story’ talks for the first time about the unique challenges faced by Fernando Torres in his two seasons in England after joining Liverpool from Spanish club Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2007. The publication, told in his own word, includes a collection of candid snapshots of his early years in Spain and life on Merseyside on and off the field.

The new release looks at Fernando’s arrival at Liverpool, how the striker adapted to life at the historic club- home to local heroes Steven Gerrrad and Jaime Carragher- the camaraderie of the ‘Spanish reds’, his experiences in the Premier League and Champions League, and what it feels like to play in front of the legendary Kop- supporters who took to Fernando as if he was one of their own.

El Niño, My Story’ is available in hardback, recommended retail price £18.99.

Merida hopes to stage Spain’s qualification celebrations as Torres win cap number 70

On Wednesday Spain could join the growing list of countries to have secured a place at the 2010 World Cup finals. A victory for Fernando Torres and his teammates against Estonia in Merida, kick-off at 22:00 hours (local time), could see Spain join eight other countries in next summer’s tournament.

With the hosts South Africa already qualified, this weekend saw Ghana beat Sudan 2-0 to become the first African side to reach the 2010 World Cup from the qualifiers. Also on Saturday, Brazil beat their South American rivals Argentina 3-1 in Rosario to secure their place. South Korea, North Korea, Japan, Australia, and Holland make up the rest of the teams who are assured of a place at the 2010 World Cup.

Despite winning all seven of their Group Five matches, including a 5-0 thrashing of Belgium at the weekend, Bosnia’s victory against Armenia meant that Spain have yet to seal qualification.
The European champions are six points ahead of second-placed Bosnia with just three matches remaining (at home to Estonia, and away to Armenia and Bosnia).

Estonia, who are second bottom in Group 5, have had a poor World Cup qualifying campaign and are out of the hunt for a top two finish. The Estonians have only picked up one point on their travels and arrive on the back of a 4-2 defeat at Turkey.

Spain beat Estonia 3-0 in Tallin in the corresponding fixture. Fernando Torres won his team the penalty from which Villa scored his country’s second. The striker also played a key part in Spain’s second as Puyol headed the ball into an empty net after Torres’ effort had struck the bar.

The match will be the 25 year old forward’s 70th for his country. Torres’ caps for the national team currently place him fourth in the table of Spain’s current crop of players. Only Iker Casillas, Puyol and Xavi have represented Spain on more occasions than the forward.

The Spaniard, who has worked under three national team managers (Iñaki Sáez, Luis Aragonés and Vicente del Bosque) has hit 23 goals in 69 games. Goal number 24 for the Liverpool and Spain number ‘9’ against Estonia would take Fernando past both legendary Spain players Julio Salinas and Alfedo Di Stefano.

Valencia's two Davids were the stars on Saturday night, as Spain crushed Belgium to maintain their perfect record...

Spain 5-0 Belgium - Lineups/Stats
UEFA World Cup Qualifying - Fixtures/Stats

Spain are yet to drop any points in World Cup Qualifying, after they hammered Belgium at the Riazor.

David Silva and David Villa scored twice, along with Gerard Pique, to complete a sensational performance for La Furia Roja.

Vicente Del Bosque made his intentions clear by pairing Villa with Fernando Torres in attack, while Sergi Busquets replaced his Barcelona team-mate Andres Iniesta in midfield. Belgium, meanwhile, chose Moussa Dembele up front, with the likes of Marouane Fellaini supporting him.

As expected, La Furia Roja were swiftly out of the blocks, and Villa came close after eight minutes, when he shot wide from the edge of the box, after being set up by Xabi Alonso. The Valencia forward was a constant threat, and was unlucky not to open the scoring minutes later when his shot was cleared off the line, after he had pounced on a knockdown from Busquets.

Spain were getting ever closer, as Torres hit a decent shot that scraped the post, and El Nino had another chance after being played through by a sublime through ball from Xavi, but he shot wide under pressure from Timmy Simons.

A goal seemed inevitable, and everyone inside the Riazor celebrated when the woeful Anthony Vanden Borre impeded Villa inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot. El Guaje stepped up, but his penalty straight down the middle was a tame effort, and Gillet did well to keep it out with his feet.

The trouble was only just beginning for Belgium though, as the impressive Jan Vertonghen had to be withdrawn through injury. Torres then saw another shot brush the woodwork, but just when it looked as though the visitors might escape unscathed from the first half, Silva struck.

Receiving a superb through ball from Villa, Silva unleashed a precise shot straight into the bottom corner, given the hosts a well deserved lead going into the break.

Belgium needed a vast improvement to get back into the game, but their chances were all but eradicated almost as soon as the half began.

First, the protagonists for the first goal combined again, as Silva picked out Villa on the left, who cut inside before smashing an unstoppable shot into the far right hand corner.

The Riazor crowd were all off their seats, and they did not have time to sit down before the ball was back in the Belgian net. This time it came from an unlikely source, as Pique found himself in nosebleed territory near the penalty spot, and he made no mistake to tuck Villa's cutback away.

After scoring the third, Spain settled down, content just to pass it amongst themselves, as the "ole's" rang out from the crowd. With 25 minutes remaining, Del Bosque withdrew Torres, replacing him with Albert Riera. Seconds later, the home side had yet another goal.

Breaking down the right in acres of space, Alvaro Arbeloa cut the ball back to Silva, who let fly with yet another blockbuster that found its way into the bottom right hand corner of Belgium's net.

With twenty minutes remaining, Cesc Fabregas entered the fray, replacing Xavi. Spain were still hungry for more goals, and Xabi Alonso tested Gillet with a rasping drive that was well saved by the young custodian.

Fabregas was making an immediate impression, and he nearly added the fifth with a stunning strike from distance, which the impressive Gillet kept out with a sprawling save.

With five minutes remaining, Del Bosque made his final switch, bringing Raul Albiol on for Arbeloa. It looked as though the match would meander to a conclusion, but there was still time for a symbolic fifth.

Receiving the ball in midfield, Xabi Alonso picked out Fabregas, who had beaten the offside trap, with a perfect pass. The Arsenal captain was then left with the simple task of squaring it to Villa, who stroked home into the empty net.

Thus Spain maintain their perfect record, and, depending on other results, they may have the chance to seal qualification with a win against Estonia in midweek.
