Anyway, we decided that scams like this continue because there are a lot of stupid people in the world and we sometimes forget this because we hang out with "people like us".
How smug does that sound?
However, that does not stop it being true. I'd like to think that there is a cadre of nuclear physicists on a message board somewhere discussing how depressingly dim people like me are.
It's quite an eye-opener when you step outside of your normal environment as I did last week when I went to see Tim Vine (the one-liner stand-up comedian) at the Community Civic Hall in Broxbourne. Until we found out there was no chance of getting our kids into either of the good schools in Broxbourne we were considering moving there, as it looks a good place to live: quite close to London, not far from Hertford, nice village, lots of parkland and rivers (Lea Valley) and so on. It wasn't until I went to the Tim Vine gig and met some of the residents that I remembered how close to the borders of Essex it is ... It seems to be a bit of a Chigwell overspill area, full of used car dealers and dodgy plumbers. Probably thoroughly nice chaps, the lot of them, and bally useful if one wants to buy a car and install a shower unit inside it, but somehow they are not cut of the same cloth as the people we usually meet at stand-up comedy nights. Many of them were our age, for a start!
So, maybe a lucky escape for Broxbourne and us.
On the subject of dim people, I know it is very old hat to talk about e-mail scams but this one I received today just underlined the point that there must be a lot of very stupid people in this world, and these people are either sending out e-mails like the one below or, worse still, responding to them.

"BANK OF ENGLAND/MICROSOFT HOUSE" - ah, yes, of course. I must have missed the news item that announced the merger of the Bank of England and Microsoft.
As for "International "E-MAIL" Promotions Program, to promote the use of emails all over the World", I think we are all agreed that the one thing the world does not need is more frikking e-mails, especially this one!
Lastly, do Microsoft really need to pay millions of pounds in a lottery payout to "promote the use of Microsoft Office"?
Sorry, I know it is old hat and this scam has been around for ages. At least it is transparent to anyone with half a brain-cell, unlike endowment mortgages.
