Fiendish Games

Thoughts of a sometime board games designer

Time for one more sick gag before you go, Kevin?

, ,

OK. Looks like that you can cancel plans for that anniversary edition of Take That You Fiend! I've just heard that my erstwhile co-editor and loyal friend of more than 40 years, Kevin Warne, died this week. I am really upset, because he always rubbed it in how he was younger than me, and now he always will be.

If the above sounds callous, well, those who knew him will appreciate that it's the sort of approach he would have wanted. Let's imagine there is a colour that's blacker than black. Let's also imagine that black is a colour, so the fecking pedants don't write in. Let's call this colour that is blacker than black "sprdoink".

Kevin was a master of sprdoink humour.

It's a sprdoink day.

Regards,

John

Bit of a kick in the nuts for you I guess (not that much fun for Kevin either I assume). I guess he must have been what, 52? so one of those weird circs where a child dies before a parent. It would be hypocritical for me to claim to have been close, I don't think Kev ever made a close connection to anything that might have been described as Hobby Hardcore. You were always the bridge between the TTYF subset (Kev, the Dukes, Lloyds, Cousins of this world) and the rest of us.

But like you say, as black and sick a sense of humour as you can imagine. I never quite worked out who was doing what in your joint writings, but I figure most of the Belgrano Biggest Bang of the Year kind of stuff was Kevin. It'd be difficult to appropriately mourn the guy in the context of a family funeral, but it would be nice to raise a few glasses to his memory at Midcon.

The decision not (as a rule) to identify who had written what was deliberate editorial policy. I think we were sufficiently similar in outlook and humour to have a single editorial voice. In general, however, a lot of the sicker stuff was Kevin's though I had my moments.

You are right. Kevin was never one of the hardcore gaming hobby. I think there were/are too many twats in the hobby for his liking. About 5% of them you'd be happy to hang out with, 80% of them you'd be happy to exchange a few words with at the bar in passing, which leaves 15% ranking somewhere below wasps on the list of creatures you'd want to be trapped in a room with. A 3:1 ratio of wasps-to-wits are not good odds.

Get in touch if you want details of the funeral. It is next Wednesday afternoon (the 9th) in Upminster, Essex. I think Birks, Woody and Doddsy are going to come if they can get the time off and Oakes too if he can raise the money. Apparently, Oakes currently has no car and no bank card. No idea if the two are related, but he is writing cheques to friends as a way of raising cash.

Otherwise, yes, we will certainly raise a glass at MidCon to his memory.
