I downloaded opera mini 3 from http://www.getjar.com on my samsung sgh-370 and at first I did not know what it was all about. I saw that the software was good and helpful. However, OMG announced that they would upgrade the browser.
I had been waiting for this new software for what I would call a long time. There was a time when I could not take the waiting any longer and that was when I started reading from the OM forum that some people had actually downloaded the beta. I could not wait for an email to notify me about the release as was promised by the OMG. I instead kept on searching for a clue as to where I could download the new beta from.
I eventually discovered from the forum the download address and I did manage to download OM4b1 with doubts. The first facility I wanted to see was the zoom effect and I was happy it was considered. This was several steps in the right direction as far as I was concerned and I thought for once that browsing on mobile would never be the same again. Opera had set the pace. I saw several other additions.
After using the software for quite sometime, I started realising that it had some problems and several special features were missing. I saw that the beta could not download some images on some websites, some sites had image and text overlap, scrolling problems, image quality was not very good, I could not access my yahoo mail, and the RSS feeds facility had been done away with. At this time I was still using the sgh-e370.
There was also one feature which I wanted very much though I was wondering if it were possible. This was flash or media player ability (javascript-like). Landscape view was another.
All in all, I was very happy with the direction that my favourite software had taken. I only started looking foward to an improved version and one that would keep my eyes completely off OM3.
I changed the phone to samsung d900 and then Nokia 6680. This was when the second beta was released. OM4b2 came with the much requested for landscape view which did not work well on my 6680. It was simply impossible to use it though I very much wanted it. I sent a bug report.
Then there came the third beta which I downloaded with a bit of difficulty because everytime I tried to do so, my newly acquired Nokia 6680 could say "failed to install". Eventually I managed to install using my phone browser with the access point set on celtel wap. What I saw really impressed me.
The rss (or atom) feeds were added, landscape view was working better than in OM4b2, image download and quality had improved, caching and cookies were much better.
However, I realised that there was a problem with small fonts setting on 6680.
There was serious text overlap. I did a bug report and voila! It was fixed and I was enjoying my OM4b3 though it had other features which I could not use such as opera link and synchronisation.
I kept waiting for the final release which I thought would be done someday in December 2007.
I realised from the forum that I was like the only one who was using the 6680 among the active members of the opera forum. Morever, I wasn't at all in big time love with this phone. I then decided to buy a nokia n95-1. At first I got a fake n95.
I installed opera mini 4.0 on the n95 and discovered that it was fantastic on this phone. The only issue I had and still have as of 26th January 2008 is that of loss of feeds even after reinstalling them. Otherwise, it remains my best mobile browser.
I am planning to use om4 on an iPhone (improved iPhone). Here I mean an iPhone that would allow me to use third party apps
which are usually better and of a wide variety.
A day before fools day 2008 omg announced the release of om4.1 beta and I managed to download the general (or is it signed) version two or three days later on to the nokia n95. How sweet! I started saving pages which I did not need to download over and over for instance yahoo search, livesearch, some wikipedia pages etc. There was also downloading and uploading facility.
However, with all this niceness, I still wished opera mini had away of:
i) proper zooming effect through three or more stages. As a matter of fact the wish I always have had is that the box that shows up during zooming could be in such a way that its size, through a selection from the menu, may be varied with the use of the up/down or left/right keys in order to select the zooming size. I imagine this being called 'effective free zooming ability (EFZA)'!
ii) selecting a link at any zoom level instead of going to the maximum zoom level all the time,
iii) I do not know how to put this wish across but I will try to bring it out, as a layman, that if at all I need any flash (or Javascript?) effect I can select to do that, connect and only that part downloads through flashlite or whatever. Kind of weird wishes but I wish they could come true.
iv) not so very important for me but just like many other people, moving bookmarks (and now saved pages) not only by one step at a time but only once to the position that I want to.
Then the final om4.1 was released though it was not very different from the beta. It was still lovelly and I eventually discovered that the downloading facility was also fantastic. It was faster to download using om4.1 than through the inbuilt browser and the downloaded app was saved for future reinstallation. However I had to use the phone's file browser ( X-plore ) to complete the download. Om5 I waits.
I actually downloaded operamini 5 beta several weeks ago but could not update my blog due to the limitations that I have on my nokia n95 until today 17th October 2009 when I have access to a computer. Also I had posted on one of the forums for opera that I would quit all opera products because of opera's lack of sensitivity to users requests as regards opera mobile for symbian, a statement which I should withdraw now though it was all because of frustration.
Om5b1 is really promising and once everything is finalised, it will surely be the best j2me (java) browser the world has ever seen. This version has come with the much requested for copy/paste, in-line editing, icons on front page, etc.
There are only 2 things that are needed to complete om5 in my opinion. These include the ability to have several zoom levels (with the ability to access links at each level), better handling of long dropdowns (to be scrollable), and the ability to handle videos (somehow). There are several other minor adjustments which need to be made, but for me the 3 above are major. At the moment I am still using om4.2 while I wait for the next release of om5.
I just wanted to include here that I am editing this blog post using opera 10.10 beta Unite which is very fast on my very slow network. I will surely encourage everybody here to use opera turbo or unite on their PCs.
