Just a short entry here, without boring you with family snap shots
Prior to leaving to go to the lake Auntie Linda's dog Milo was wondering what exactly he was supposed to do with our little Christmas visitor...
At the lake there was an after Christmas volleyball game which my boyfriend captained...
And much time was spent on the boats with friends...

This weekend was one of the best weekends I've had in a while, for so many reasons. Good friends and family, a new boat to try out, some wildlife and some of the best photos I've ever taken of birds!!
The trip started in the normal African way...
For me a big plus of the weekend was finally seeing hippo at the lake. I'd begun to think they were creatures of myth and everyone was leading me on. But sure enough they do exist...
Then I move swiftly on to what was, for me, the most amazing moments. We decided to feed the fish eagles. We bought some fish from the fishermen (4 for less than 50p) and went to find the eagles. They are used to ocassionally being fed by the fishermen when the catch isn't worthwhile so what works is to stand on the boat, fish raised in hand and whistle. Once you throw the fish in the water they swoop down and don't hsitate to circle right over your head, although they won't take the fish unless they feel it's at a safe enough distance. However, having fish eagles circle right above you is an opportunity no half decent wildlife photographer could ever pass up...exhibits A, B, C and D!!!...
And although this isn't a brilliant photo due to the distance from the subject and it's heavy cropping, it captures the essence of what we were watching and still amazes me to look at...
And on the way back...another not very good photo due to low lighting and bumpy roads. But still...I have to give the man credit in some form!!

It's that time of year...the rains are starting to come and with them seems to be coming a range of African insects that can rival their big five overshadowers when it comes to intrigue.
I leave the rain spiders well alone...they are far too large and fast for me to hang around. But this big guy (little guy was nicer but massively incorrect) was around the rock garden when I came home one evening. He was just under a foot long and had managed to get himself trapped, somehow, on the little rocky island in the pond.
And of course the wind and rain are blowing all the flowers off the trees. It's sad but it does make for a beautiful photo when they land in the swimming pool...
My next blog has me very excited so don't expect much breathing room between now and then!!
