Music Quiz - #90

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Hi there

OK - here's the deal : Every week, I'm going to post a song widget here - and I want you to tell me the following details :
1) Song Title
2) Artist name
3) Album it (first) appeared on.

The first person to leave a comment at the bottom of the post with the correct info gets proclaimed FR's 'Music Guru Of The Week' and a link to his\her 'about' or blog page published here

I've got some pretty obscure stuff in my collection, so we'll see how it goes. If there's a lot of clever people out there, I might start making it *quite* hard

Anyway - here's song the 90th in the series - and again maybe the last quiz of 2008 : Who'd a thought it?? Anyway - another UK band, this song from a 1994 album. Good Luck
************
To follow this quiz, stroll over to here - where I've started a new quiz post for 2009
************
OK - fire away..and don't forget - use Google, Yahoo, Palmists, Soothsayers, Voodoo Chillen and\or any of the resources you have available - friends, colleagues, distant relatives whom you may not like but who don't actually have lives and thus know everything there is to know about less popular recordings of the last 30 years - just whatever  and, of course - I am very willing & able to answer questions, engage in dialogue, give clues - I want winners, not blank scorecards

******************************************************************************************************
I've archived all of the previous Quiz Songs in ongoing-updated-weekly-widget-situations Part one here....and Part two here....and Part three here - along with the accompanying blurbs. Another opportunity for a listen and perhaps a read  There's some interesting music in there

I think a couple of clues are required for #46 :

a) The first singer in this band was the brother of the singer in ABC.

b) One of the singles (included on this album) was adopted by Oasis as their opening live number.

rose-marie 10. June 2008, 17:30

Thank you for the clues - they were very helpful

Song: Lose my way
Band: World of twist
Album: Quality Street

flamingo rinse 10. June 2008, 20:49

 Thank you very much Rose - that will do nicely  I'll write it up this evening when I get home. Well done

Do you like the new format?? Do the new style blogs work for you, as a participant?? Anything you like to see done differently?

rose-marie 10. June 2008, 21:01

:hat:

Do you mean the widget? I like that, although the blurbs are a little big. Can't think of any way of doing it better though, as I suspect the widget contains music only.

flamingo rinse 10. June 2008, 21:27

Correct. I'd need an individual text doc for each song entry, for a separate 'blurb' widget. I'm guessing that as the songs & blurbs are in the same (alphabetical) order now, it makes about as much sense as it can, if anyone's interested in reading either 'all of it' or looking up an entry for a particular song. I'm thinking of making the widgets a finite size (like, 60 or 100 songs, probably smaller rather than larger) before starting a new one - so that there'll end up being more than one archive - that way a widget & accompanying texts won't get mind-bogglingly big. Mind you - I don't know how long it'll be before I actually run out of material to post  Not soon - but at some point it's bound to happen......

OMG :insane: - then what am I going to do??? I have considered enhancing the experience with actual pictures of the album covers - but that's maybe a bridge too far, with the phaser set to 'nerd', and perhaps just too much trouble. Do you actually read the blurbs (more than once for the original post)??

flamingo rinse 11. June 2008, 08:00

Quiz # 47 posted, Snack Lovers

rose-marie 11. June 2008, 08:18

I think you're right. Album covers might be too much. Yes, I do read the blurbs, and I appreciate that they are in the same order as the songs in the widget :D.

As for the quiz song - I feel like smoking! :eyes: p:

Phantom2 19. June 2008, 00:12

I'm going to take a WILD stab at #47....Vaguely sounds like something the "Lemon Pipers" might have done.

Rose-Marie....got a light?

flamingo rinse 19. June 2008, 05:39

Hey - welcome back P2  But, Lemon Pipers...nuh-uuh, sorry

OK- a quite good clue :

This band took it's name from a book, found by a band member in his new apartment. It had been left there by previous tenant Tony Conrad - who's been quite influential himself, over the years (although his name isn't well known, generally) :sherlock:

Phantom2 20. June 2008, 05:41

Ok, the book clue gave it away!:D

The song is "What Goes on" from the Velvet Underground self titled album released I think in 1969.(?)

flamingo rinse 20. June 2008, 10:58

Right on P2, good onya, man - I thought no one was going to get it  Written up with due Kudos - and - fast & furious quiz 48 posted, snack lovers

flamingo rinse 20. June 2008, 20:50

Well done Rose :hat: (not your cup of tea, I take it?) Well - never mind - it's only been up for a couple of hours  I'll write it up asap & thanks for participating, even tho'...

rose-marie 20. June 2008, 21:03

Yay :hat:
It's more Courtney Love I have difficulties with... :left:

Hey Phantom :D.

flamingo rinse 20. June 2008, 22:22

@Mart - Yes, it is entertaining isn't it - I like it a lot

Rapunzel 23. June 2008, 21:37

'Wee Tam'. I'd like to say.. "I should have known"..but
Where the heck did you get that from? I searched for ages for the album title.

flamingo rinse 24. June 2008, 00:39

Well - I've had the CD for quite a long time - originally got it from Amazon US, 2nd hand - was about $10 NZ plus postage  Nobody else in my house likes it  But - I 'collected' it on vinyl years ago & just had to have it on CD, since I left my record deck & etc. behind when we came to NZ (considering I've got a sizeable LP collection as well, that wasn't the smartest move, it turns out. But I was used to quality hifi gear being relatively easy to get - which is not quite the case in NZ  )

I'm thinking of having an other song from 'Wee Tam' as my random SOTW next week

flamingo rinse 24. June 2008, 08:17

Helloooo Snack Lovers, wherever you are :sing: - quiz the 51st posted

flamingo rinse 27. June 2008, 01:50

I think a clue is required :

This band derived it's name from a harmless (but maybe cool sounding) medical condition..'where 20% of the blood flow travels to the brain and back to the heart. Due to the large amount of blood, it can move quite fast causing the vein walls to vibrate which can create a humming noise to be heard by the patient'.

One of the band members has this condition.

Hmm. Hope that helps

Rapunzel 27. June 2008, 04:07

Sorry havn't had time to listen yet. Dial up yah know. Kids kicking me offline. Ciao for now.

flamingo rinse 27. June 2008, 04:26

Cool  OK - I might have start a new quiz, called 'Beat The Rap' - where participants pit there skills against yours (kidding, of course)

Rapunzel 27. June 2008, 19:40

Catchy title

Echem....

Song title ~ Alice
Artist ~ Venus Hum
Album ~ Big Beautiful Sky.

flamingo rinse 27. June 2008, 20:15

Excellent  That's a correct answer :D Well done Rapunzel - I'll write it up asap, & hope we don't get flooded out or any power lines blown down before I manage to post it :eyes: Exciting weather....

flamingo rinse 27. June 2008, 20:47

Quiz 53 posted

flamingo rinse 28. June 2008, 10:29

Personally, I'm looking forward to posting Q#54 - it's a humdinger :D

flamingo rinse 2. July 2008, 06:57

Hmm. The trail's going cold on this one. Pity, such a great song...let me see - well - you'd definitely hear it if you were having a bit of a Raymond Chandler Evening. The beach is on the Isle of Wight. Ummm....the title of the album it appears on (twice, the studio & live versions) is mentioned in the song....:sherlock:

Rapunzel 2. July 2008, 11:33

Nice pic thanks Mr Rinse.
Song title ~ Airscape
Artist ~ Robyn Hitchcock
Album ~ Element of light.

That was lovely, makes me wish my car stereo was behaving.

rose-marie 2. July 2008, 12:18

:hat:

Now, can't wait for the humdinger :D.

Rapunzel 2. July 2008, 12:28

Nice that you're so sure I'm right.

flamingo rinse 2. July 2008, 21:16

:D Thank you very much Rapunzel - I was getting sooo impatient to post the humdinger. :hat:

The song 'Airscape' is particularly good, I think - although from a relatively little known album - and that live version is everything I want in live music - it's not perfect, but it's a great song, played without frills (& honestly) and takes the odd risk - I mean - that heroic high vocal note at the end - a waver or bum note there would have screwed the entire performance - but the vocalist went for it anyway. Brilliant. It sends shivers up & down my spine

Haha - now I've written that, it's all going to be copied into the blurb anyway

Rapunzel 2. July 2008, 21:52

Cool....you Hum & I'll ding.

flamingo rinse 2. July 2008, 22:15

OK Hummers & Dingers - Quiz #54 posted  Another good effort IMHO

theoddbod 3. July 2008, 22:05

Don't know the track, but the 'feel' is very familiar :sherlock:

Rapunzel 4. July 2008, 05:59

Ding ding ding.
But I'm tired of being a girly swot...
So I'm not telling. p:

flamingo rinse 4. July 2008, 06:42

@Rap  fair enough. Did you find it easy??

@Mart...maybe - the band released 2 albums, the first in '71. This track's from the 2nd (which, amusingly, is rated online as 'good - but not essential')...a couple of the members went on to have some effect in the 70s and 80s and at least a couple of them are still alive & kicking out there, as far as I can tell

flamingo rinse 4. July 2008, 06:47

OK - here's a bit of a clue : One member went on to participate in The Little River Band :sherlock:

Phantom2 4. July 2008, 06:59

Well that would be the band "Esperanto". But I'm not familar at all with the song....:frown:
