Preparing to Go to an Alcohol Treatment Center

, ,

Preparing to Go to an Alcohol Treatment Center Choosing to go to an alcohol treatment center is a big decision and it is going to disrupt your day-to-day life. However, at this point you have probably decided that your drinking problem is disrupting your life even more and that going to treatment is the better option. Treatment programs generally last 28 days, which means that there will be a month during which time you will be absent. In preparation for going to the treatment center you should give your employer notice of your leave or, if you are in school, let your professors know that will be gone for a month. It is also a good idea to arrange for someone to check your mail or to put your mail delivery on hold. If you have any other regular commitments, then you will need to let the people involved know that you will not be available for a period of time. This would be a good idea if you are on any committees or have any meetings that you attend regularly. Discussing the decision to go to an alcohol treatment center with you family is also crucial. Chances are your immediate family is aware of your decision. Your spouse is likely to know, but if you have children you will also want to discuss your decision with them. Make sure that they understand that you will miss them very much, but that going away is the best thing for your health and wellbeing and theirs too. If there are other members of your family you need to tell, such as parents and siblings, then it might be a good idea to meet and discuss your decision with them. The next step is to prepare yourself physically and mentally for your time at the treatment center. You need to make yourself aware of the facility’s policies regarding what you can bring. Then you need to pack accordingly. Make sure you pack enough comfortable clothes that you will have plenty for the weeks you are at the center. Fashion is not your concern at this point. Ensure you have all your toiletries packed as well. The treatment center will take all of your medication and vitamins (they will dispense them to you as required) so it is a good idea to pack them in a bag together so that you can turn it in once you check in. It is only natural to feel anxiety and fear and any number of other emotions before you go to the treatment center. Try to get plenty of rest and avoid turning to alcohol to soothe those feelings. Ask any questions that you might have. You can talk to your doctor, your counselor, and the staff at the treatment center if you have any concerns, questions, or just want to talk out your feelings. After all, going to an alcohol treatment center can be intimidating and overwhelming. However, what awaits you at the end of the road is an experience that will set you free of your addiction and that makes it all worth while.
