This is funny. In a story about Hillary Clinton challenging Barack Obama to a “Lincoln/Douglas style debate”, the geniuses at Fox News accidentally used a photo of Frederick Douglas:..
Allright. So I may not have had american history in school, and I may not work in the infotainment media and earn a couple of millions every six months for making an ass of myself. But even I know that Douglas (as in "Lincoln-Douglas") hammered Lincoln on everything from cozying up to blacks, to tearing the union apart because of adhering to classic principles about human dignity, equality and so on - in short, that the debates were about slavery. At the head of one of the most fateful period in American history, the civil war.
Other than that, the debates take a specific form - which also of course is impossible on TV.. "And before we hear the final ten minutes of the rebuttal, here is a word from our sponsor!".
So what posesses someone working in news to put up Hillary's challenge to Obama for a "Lincoln-Douglas" debate into a headline like this? What sort of thinking, if any, is moving behind that? Did Abe Lincoln, prognosticator of the honorable White man (who in no way exploited slavery politically) need a black challenger? Is Hillary the Abe character here?
Seriously - that contraceptive bomb over the northern half of the American continent seems to become a more and more sound idea by the hour. But I still think we need a more palatable political excuse before being able to request funding for a preemptive political campaign.
What about "irreversible degeneration of humanity as a race"? ...No, smells too much of Birkenau. Mm. What about "spreading democracy and liberty"? I mean, /that/ could mean /anything/.
