The gist of the problematic is this: civil liberties, human rights and their advocates are such tainted subjects that Obama should not provoke a fight in public. This is because the people will get the wrong idea. As usual, digby is correct. While failing to really try describing why, of course, rather than simply regretting the role of the political elite.
