Today the Baker- Hamilton- commission, or the "Iraq Study Group", delivered their printed paper- back report, ceremoniously and officially, to the president of the United States.

However, as much as this report is welcome, the tale of the Iraq Study group up to this point is as curious as it is revealing. The favourite narrative in the Washington establishment at the moment is how Bush's father is coming to the rescue of his poor, hapless son, of course. And many constrained chuckles follow, as the nondescript elite in the background deals with their Bush- complex on their own. But the actual story (which isn't about the reporters or the pundits), as usual, is rather more unsettling...
