Ok, then. Turns out that the d- link dwl-g510 rev.C (rt61 chip) card I have (cheap, extremely common) - actually has had just about all the strange software issues with it fixed. But you wouldn't know that if you downloaded the driver from d-link. Since they haven't updated it since the card was released over two years ago.
The people who made the chip on the card have a new driver for download, though. With a very nice and functional monitor- tool:
