The monsoon's have finally arrived. Heralding their entry with dark grey clouds, thunder and lightning. All has suddenly turned grey, dark and wet. The thick summer dust has been washed away, and all trees and vegetation are looking cool and green now. How

Blog Action Day '08, Poverty. As I view it.

THIS IS MY PERSONAL VIEW ON POVERTY, NO DISRESPECT OR OFFENCE IS INTENDED AGAINST ANY INDIVIDUAL, GROUP OR ORGANISATION. flotsam22 aka Denis E.Chesney

‘Poverty’ is a word that stirs up an intensity of feelings.
It is presented with charts, figures, graphs and a whole heap of calculations and unique ideas how to deal with its eradication. It is a favorite prop in speeches of political aspirants. Many questions have been asked; many answers have been given, but “Has poverty been alleviated in any way significant to back up the endeavor of its eradication, can a positive answer to this question be given, most probably not. It is easy to define, calculate and write volumes on poverty but these volumes no matter how large, cannot and do not fill an empty stomach, or dress a naked body, or provide shelter to a single needy person.

The 4 most basic wants are food, clothing and shelter and gainful employment.
If we can provide these 4 items we have taken a positive step to alleviate poverty, we must alleviate Poverty globally before we can even think of eradicating it. We as humans have a tendency of “glorifying” a subject before we take action to deal with it, this has happened with the subject of poverty. The work done by NGO’S and other Organizations are good and humane, but that is not an end to a means. A simple and intelligent solution is required, anything that is elaborate or difficult to implement is the least desired. Down to earth simplicity is the way to start the battle against poverty.
An old adage says” Give a man a fish and he will have food for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will have food always.” or words to this effect.
Those of us who are really concerned with the total eradication of poverty and making it “history” must do exactly as this old adage teaches. We must create jobs, give basic training in self dependence, and provide the expertise to improve skills, use local and available resources, thus creating gainful employment so that the poor can provide for themselves and not depend on handouts or charity .They will emerge a better stronger, self dependent society of achievers and the battle against poverty has been well begun.
