Lorenzo Logarta or Kimsoy (Chu Kim So or Soy), was born in Amoy, China on November 25, 1870. Before he came to the Philippines in the late 1800s, he was already a married man. It is not known if the marriage of Lorenzo and Marcela was legalized due to his previous marriage in China..
Nothing is known about his Chinese wife, except that they had three offsprings, the eldest, Ramon, and two girls after Ramon. Ramon was brought to the Philippines by his father. He was slightly dark-skinned, reportedly typical of Shanghai Chinese. Perhaps, the Chinese wife’s family came from Shanghai or some southern city. Ramon did not stay long in the Philippines as he and Benito, Lorenzo’s only son with Marcela Carvajal, could not get along well.
When Kimsoy settled in Cebu, Philippines, he married Marcela Carvajal, known as Diding. Her family came from Luzon and were originally surnamed Lim but adopted the Carvajal surname when they became naturalized. She was reportedly a real, petite beauty, unlike the plain-looking wife in China. Her daughter, Corazon, was a spitting image of her. .
Offsprings from this marriage were:
Andrea (possiblyborn in 1899)
Remedios (possibly born in 1901)
Corazon (possiblyborn in 1903)
Benito (possibly born in 1905)
Dionisia (born on April 8,1907)
Although Kimsoy brought Marcela to his home town in China after their marriage, she did not stay long because his Chinese family was antagonistic towards her.
They first lived near the present residence of the Chiongbian patriarch,William and his father before him, in Mabolo; a house by the beach before it was reclaimed, where all their children were born. They later moved to a house at the corner of now Cabantan and L. Tudtud streets, also in Mabolo.
Marcela or Diding raised cows and goats for milk and cheese (quezeo); and operated a stable ( cuadra) of horses for pulling tartanillas, the only public conveyances available then, and which existed until phased out by the city government in the early 1960s. Because of her horse stable and tartanilla business, Remedios became secretly engaged to a cochero. Of the siblings, Corazon was the first to be married, whose marriage to Joaquin Uy of Manila, was pre-arranged or “boya”. Kimsoy wanted his first born, Andrea, to marry the scion of the owner of Gotao Milling, but instead, she eloped with a fisherman from Cordova, Cebu, Sabas Jumao-as. A week after Andrea eloped, Remedios also eloped with Juanito Basubas, the cochero. This seemingly unfortunate development of events so disgusted Kimsoy that he decided to bring his two unmarried children, Benito and Dionisia, to Anahawan, Leyte where he already had a flourishing trading business. Dionisia eventually married a school teacher of Anahawan, Hugo Quimbo, while she was working as cashier of her father’s store. Benito was brought to China by Kimsoy, where he stayed for about 5-6 years. Corazon later re-married to Bruno Echavia of Anahawan (?). Kimsoy’s bringing their unmarried children to Anahawan resulted in the break up of his marriage with Marcela Carvajal who remained in Cebu. She later re-married or lived together with Marcos Saberon, a neighbor and a blacksmith who made and installed horse shoes of her horses. She had a daughter, Constancia, and a son, Vicente from that union. She died while giving birth to Vicente.
Kimsoy, now quite affluent, expanded his business, which included copra and abaca trading; he also operated several cargo and passenger vessels.
He had bedroom dalliances and romantic flings with several pretty women, both in Cebu and in Anahawan. But he was also a show-off, extravagant and lavish with his wealth. H would assume expenses of town fiestas, especially when there were beauty queens involved. When he occasionally goes home to China, he would ask that he be met with brass bands at his expense and shower his friends and relatives with monetary gifts.
He then married Eufronia Morandarte, a Spanish mestiza beauty from Malitbog, Leyte. This union in the late 1920s produced two lovely daughters of Chinese-Spanish features, Desamparados and Linda.
His business and wealth then began to decline as he continued to flaunt his wealth.Consequently, he was either forced to sell his properties or were foreclosed by the banks.
In the meantime, his eye for beauty again caught sight of a young and pretty sales girl (tindera) of his store. Her name was Irene Resma which he eventually married or lived with although still married or living together with the other spouse, Eufronia Morandarte. He installed both families in his large house in Anahawan –that of Eufronia occupying the upper floor, while that of Irene in the lower floor. However, he endured the difficulties of living throughout World War II with Irene. They had six children, almost all of whom had the distinctive Chinese features of Lorenzo. These were Leonor, Lorenzo Jr, Helen, Franklin, Nelson and Fatima.
