THE DARK KNIGHT

OK, I'll jump onboard the hype right away.
This is the best movie ever made.
There I said it. Notice I didn't use any qualifying words. I'm not saying this is the best superhero movie ever made (which it is), nor am I saying this is the best crime movie ever made (which it also is), nor did I say it's the best action movie (which it is, too), nope, I didn't say that. It's the best movie I've ever seen and I've watched hundreds, if not thousands, of movies in the last half century. I give it a "10" on my "1 to 5" scale.
I hardly ever use the word masterpiece but that is what this movie is.
They're talking about a posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger. He deserves it. His Joker is the embodiment of total amoral insanity. An absolutely brilliant performance. He isn't really funny, he's frightening. He's chaos personified. You will not once think of him as an actor playing the Joker, he literally is the Joker. There is no actor visible there, his performance is so good all you see is the character. He puts Jack Nicholson's interpretation to shame.
In fact, this movie puts every other interpretation of Batman to shame including Batman Begins. It puts all superhero movies to shame and raises the bar so high I don't how anyone will ever by able to top it.
This is also the most complex superhero movie, there's an awful lot going on in here. As with every previous Christopher Nolan film, the pacing is brillliant; the build up and payoff perfectly timed. The acting is impecible, Ledger isn't the only one who's incredible. Aaron Eckhart is excellent as Harvey Dent, and Christian Bale is the best Batman ever. The tension is so thick you need a literal knife to cut it with. That means great acting and great directing.
The hype is real. The movie lives up to it and far exceeds it. Even if you hate superhero movies, this film is so far beyond that you won't even think you're watching a superhero movie.
The film is extremely violent but not bloody. It is probably one of the darkest movies ever to come out of a Hollywood studio. There's almost no humor in it. The amount of madness and insanity on display is far more in the vein of a really scary horror movie than a Summer popcorn action flick. I wouldn't recommend taking preteens to see it at all.
The moral dilemmas in this movie are extremely disturbing particularly at the end where two ferryloads of people have the fate of the other ferry literally in the palm of their hands. It's stunning. And what the good guys are willing to do to stop the evil is devastating.
This is a masterpiece. Just go see it.
