BEST VACATION IN YEARS

I have never been to a bed & breakfast inn before but I am now completely sold on them. Forget the hotels. This is the only way to go. Check out www.castleinthecountry.com to see where we stayed. The place looks exactly like the pictures, our room actually looked better. It's beautiful. The bed was the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in and I mean that over our carefully selected bed at home. The heart shaped jacuzzi was great, the fireplace would be great in Winter but it was in the high nineties the last couple of days. Breakfast yesterday was some delightful cherry and chocolate chip scones and a cream cheese with blackberries pancake accompanied by some soothing classical music.
The town of Allegan turned out to be very picturesque. It felt like a place frozen in time back in the sixties. It has a lovely boardwalk along a small lake and an old one lane bridge across the river.
It's only about 40 minutes away from Saugatuck where we went on paddleboat tour ride, by paddleboat I mean the old fashioned kind with a huge paddle wheel across the back and that holds 80 people. We went on the evening cruise but it had gotten quite dreary and overcast by then. It cleared up completely however by the time we got to the mouth of the river. We cruised out onto Lake Michigan where they cut the engines and let us watch the sunset. The day's extreme heat and humidity had faded away and there was a wonderful cool breeze blowing. Absolutely perfect.
Yesterday we went to Grand Rapids intending to watch Batman on an IMAX screen. Unfortunately, they had changed the times from the Thursday schedule that I looked at. Since my wife wanted to be home in time for a party last night and since we were already there we watched THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR. I thought it was a hoot. Fast paced, ridiculous, cheesy, funny. I give it 4 Big Stupid Grins although most critics are lambasting it. I had a lot of fun, I was smiling, and felt good when I left. I was thoroughly entertained. Check your brain at the door and you'll have a good time, too. I think these critics forget that sometimes. Goofy fun is still fun.
A couple of days earlier we hit the casino. I managed to turn $30 into $110 so I felt really good. That was just playing the penny, nickle and quarter slots. The secret is to just play with the money you brought with you and cash out anything you win when you leave. First time I ever enjoyed slot machines.
So despite minimal resources this has been the best vacation I've had in years.
