Safari

safari jeep and zebra at ngorongoro crater

We continued our adventurous trip in Tanzania by going on a 3-day safari to the Tarangire national park, the Ngorongoro crater and lake Manyara.

We had two old safari jeeps, and I must say that standing up in the backseat of the jeep, looking out the open roof, was just as fun as watching the animals.

The safari was great, but I had hoped that we would drive more off road and that we would see some animals closer (my new camera with 18x zoom came in handy). I was also expecting a bit better living standards. Our camp was located in a scary place called "the river of mosquitoes". :yikes:

It was amazing to see how all the animals lived just next to each other, as if they were friends. We saw a lot of Zebras, Wildebeests, Antelopes, Hyenas, Giraffes, Elephants and more. We also saw a few Lions (far away), but we did not see any of the endangered Black Rhinoceros. I guess it was no surprise since there's only 10 of them left. awww

Ngorongoro is truly a special place and it was very interesting to see. It's the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera, and it was formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself around 2 million years ago. The crater floor is the home of 25,000 large animals and each summer enormous numbers of migrating animals pass through the plains of the Ngorongoro reserve, including 1.7 million Wildebeest, 260,000 Zebras and 470,000 Gazelles.

Boy I'm jealous! I've done my share of travelling, but the Kenya/Tanzania safari has long been the elusive 'next big hol'.
