Tip 1 - Follow People In Your Niche
Who would have ever thought a good way to get twitter followers was to actually follow someone?...Following a handful of new people in your niche each day will bring you new followers. It's important to not go overboard with the amount of people you follow each day as it will effect the amount of people that follow you back and your account will only look "spammy" causing you to lose the effects that come with a large targeted twitter following.
Tip 2 - Be Active And Interact With The People In Your Niche

ReTweeting people using the standard format of "RT @username" will get you new twitter followers. If you retweet something your followers find interesting they will more then likely retweet you, this puts you in a great position to get some new twitter followers. When you use all 3 of these tips together you should see your follower count grow quite quickly. Always keep in mind the amount of followers you have isn't relative to the "power" of your account. The first thing to do is look at other people's lists - these are open for anyone to look at. So the best lists would be people in your niche and then the top 'gurus' in that niche with lists.

This needs to be done incrementally - as you need to keep that balance between followers and following. That is, give folks time to follow you back before following another batch.
When starting out be circumspect with your following - do about 40-50 a day only - not hundreds - as Twitter may very well deactivate you. After you have reached about 500, incrementally increase your following - try about 10 a day more for every 100 that follow you.
If after a week some haven't followed you back, then 'unfollow' them and start to follow another batch. There are many who will have lists of say 10,000, so it won't be hard to get 10% - that's a 1000 with hardly any effort. And, they will be interested in your niche - as they in a list that is related to that niche.
