Maybe this article will be my first post at planetmandriva. So I would like to introduce myself a little. My name is Funda Wang, a translator/contributor mainly focused on Chinese. All I want is making a distro that satisfy Chinese users. It seems that Mandriva is a good start to achieve my goal 
As yoho said, the improvements of 2007 compared with 2006 doesn't worth waiting of one-year, especially in i18n-related aspect. So, I would like to take some time to think about the i18n infrastructure of next release.
The infrastructure Mandriva is using far more old than other distros, and it cannot fit the various needs of different users.

- SUSE has thrown out hal mounting policy, the policy is dynamic computed based on current locale. Other configuration files work under much the same way.
- Ubuntu provides langauge-specific settings from fontsconf to IMEs, although it is far from being perfect.
- Fedora has an advanced alternative systems on locale management issues.
