The director general of the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), Juan Manuel Torres Rojo, announced that the federal agency allocated 183 million pesos in 2011 to Forest Production, Community Forestry, Conservation and Restoration, Payment for Environmental Services and Forest Health Forest fires, among other things of benefit to the forestry sector the state of Oaxaca.

The director general of the CONAFOR said that 10 years after the creation of the National Forestry Commission, have been given greater order, clarity and relevance to the forestry sector and a notable increase in budget support, mainly in the administration headed by President the Republic, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, as CONAFOR budget is 16 times greater than it was a decade ago.

Calls to prevent forest fires

In the area of ​​Forest Fires, Red Torres recalled that the General Law for Sustainable Forestry Development mentioned as an obligation of state and municipal governments, to conduct training activities to prevent and combat forest fires in keeping with the national program that coordinates the CONAFOR.

Recognizing the contribution of those involved in this work, the public servant said that Oaxaca is among the 10 states with the greatest area affected by forest fires, hence the importance of achieving more effective coordination in fighting the fire.

He said that to date have occurred in Oaxaca a total of 69 wildfires that have affected two thousand 43 hectares, mainly of grasses and shrubs, being the most affected regions of Central Valleys and Mixteca.

ICOFA director, Alberto Jesus Belmonte explained that this project will help to have more competitive products in the furniture market and also to achieve an increase in the number of jobs from 750 thousand in the three communities that make furniture TIP, which are Santiago Textitlán, Ixtlan de Juarez and Towns Mancomunados; of this figure over 40 percent of those employed are women.

He added that the construction of the Centre for Furniture Design requires an investment of over seven million dollars, making it necessary to add the resources it has provided the community of Ixtlan de Juarez, which state governments can provide and federal levels.
