History of Fútbol Europeo Championship

The UEFA Fútbol Europeo championship is very much popular in the world of football. The football tournament which was held in 2008 and hosted by Austria and Switzerland jointly was witnessed by more than one million people and billions of them watched it on television. It was Henri Delauney from the French Football Federation who came up with the idea of Fútbol Europeo tournament on the international level. Although he came up with this idea in 1927 but the first tournament was held in 1960 hosted by France. The trophy was named after Henri Delauney in order to give a tribute to him.
Seventeen teams participated in the tournament but only four of them played in the finals. The first winner of Fútbol Europeo championship was the Soviet Union who defeated Yugoslavia in the final match held in Paris. The Fútbol Europeo championship of 1968 was hosted by Italy. Italy won this championship defeating Yugoslavia once more in the final. The semi-final match between Russia and Italy was decided by the coin toss as it was not resolved by the normal play. This championship is the most popular one after the world cup.
