Entering and Leaving the House
بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
1. Supplicate before you enter your house:
• Abu Dawud
Book 41 : Hadith 5077
Narrated AbuMalik Al-Ash’ari: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said:
When a man goes into his house, he should say:
اللهمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ المَوْلَجِ وَخََيْرَ المَخْرَجِ
بِسْمِ اللهِ
وَلَجْنَا وَبِسْمِ الله خَرَجْنَا وَعَلَى الله رَبَّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا
“O ALLAH! I ask Thee for good both when entering and when going out; in the name of ALLAH we have entered, and in the name of ALLAH we have gone out, and in ALLAH or Lord do we trust.” He should then greet his family.
• "O ALLAH, I seek a good entry and a good exit. We take ALLAH's name to enter and to exit and rely on Him who is our Lord.
After this dua greet the members of the household.(Mishkat)
• Jaabir (R.A.) narrates that Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) stated that when a man enters his home and makes Dhikr (remembers ALLAH) and also makes Dhikr at meal times, then Satan says to his colleagues that the night cannot be spent there nor can they partake of the peoples food and if no Dhikr was made on entering the house, then Satan says to his colleagues that they have an opportunity to spend the night there and if no Dhikr was made at meal times, then Satan tells his colleagues that they will be able to stay there and also get food. (Mishkat, Chapter on food)
2. Whenever you enter a house say Salaam.
• It is also a sunnah to greet the family when entering the house. Our holy Prophet instructed his personal servant Anas as follows, " O son! When you enter (your) house, greet your family members; this act shall be of benefit for both you and your family members." (Tirmidhi) Even when entering an empty house one should greet with the intent that angels are being greeted.
• Hadith - Al-Tirmidhi 4249, Narrated Anas ibn Malik
Anas or someone else told that ALLAH's Messenger (peace be upon him)asked permission to enter the house of Sa'd ibn Ubadah saying, "Peace and ALLAH's mercy be upon you." Sa'd replied, "And upon you be peace and ALLAH's mercy," but did not speak loud enough for the Prophet to hear. He gave the salutation three times and Sa'd responded three times, but did not speak loud enough for him to hear, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) went away. Sa'd went after him and said, "Messenger of ALLAH, for whom I would give my father and mother as ransom, you did not give a salutation without my hearing it and responding to you, but I did not speak loud enough for you to hear because I wanted to receive many of your salutations and so receive great blessing." They then entered the house and he offered him raisins which ALLAH's Messenger (peace be upon him) ate. Then when he finished he said, "May the righteous eat your food, may the angels invoke blessings on you, and may those who have been fasting break their fast with you!"
It is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah.
3. Read this dua before you leave your house:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
• "I depart with ALLAH's name, relying on Him. It is ALLAH who saves us from sins with His guidance (the ability to do so)." (Tirmidhi)
It is stated in the hadith that if a person recites the above dua and departs then there is an (unseen) procalamation that his need will be fullfilled and that he will be protected from any harm or injury. On hearing this dua, the Satan goes away from the place and refrains from troubling the reciting person. (Tirmidhi)
• Also recite:
"O ALLAH, I seek refuge in You from misleading or being misled or oppressing or being oppressed or from being ignorant or bearing the result of ignorance". (Mishkat)
