writing, time management, blogging
I seem to be a rather infrequent blogger, eh?
There certainly hasn't been a lack of things to write about, but when there's stuff going on worth writing about, there's no time to write. Anyone else find it difficult to post anything worth posting on a regular basis?

fireworks
Been really really busy and haven't posted to the blog in a long while. Noticed some interest in the community for fireworks photos so I uploaded an album with some of my better ones. All were shot from the fireworks barge and are looking straight up into the sky. It's a perspective you don't often see.
Hope everyone enjoys them.

OK, I guess it's been a while. Last post was in June just after I got back from Bangkok. Been on a few other trips since then.

Bangkok was great. Had a lot of fun, ate too much (the food is outstanding!), and business went well. We've actually been back for about a week, I just have been so busy I hadn't had time to post anything.
One thing that's interesting about long flights that you generally don't see on shorter flights is that it can be longer to fly from A to B than to fly from B to A. Prevailing winds, and the fact that the earth is spinning can make significant distance changes. For example, flying from LAX to NRK took 11 hours but flying from NRK to SFO took only 9. If you look at a globe, both of those distances are about the same, but two hours in a jet makes for about 1000 miles. It also took significantly less time to fly from BKK to NRK than it did going from NRK to BKK.
It's amazing how things wait for you while you're gone. Like the grass. It doesn't mind if you're gone, it just keeps growing and growing...

thailand, bangkok, asia
Been here in Bangkok for a couple of days now. Very long flights. The only thing good about air travel is that it gets it over with. A hundred years ago, even steerage class passengers had a bunk they could sleep in. Today, we cram several hundred strangers together into a big tube, make them sit in one place for hours, and have them pay a lot for the privilege. Is this progress? Hard to say.
Bangkok is cool. Not in a temperature sense of course. The weather is hot and humid. Every day we have had a downpour during the afternoon. That cools it off somewhat and certainly cleans the air. The first day we wandered around the shopping district. Our self-guided walking tour took us to see lots of great stuff. Lots of friendly people. Of course nearly everyone is trying to sell something. "Tour of city, 50 baht." I think we met 50 tailors, all of whom were the best tailor in Bangkok. I must admit, their work looked very nice, but I think they were all suffering from teen-girl-math syndrome where the "best" member of a set is non-unique. (as in, "my best friend Kim and my other best friend Sue and my other best friend Monica". No, this does not make sense unless perhaps you all of your genetic material and are nearly adult...)
Clearly the most amazing thing though were the hoards of taxi drivers wanting to take you on an hour tour of the city for 50 baht. First, you can't possibly tour the city in an hour. Second, the fuel to do so would far exceed 50 baht (less than $2 USD). Third, if they are giving such a killer deal, why are so many of them trying so hard to get you to take them up on it? Of course it's a scam. With no clear destination, they take you to places where they are paid a commission to bring you. Once there, your 50 baht time for the tour is no doubt over. Big surprise, price change. They have a hard time taking no for an answer too. "You come back half hour you come back take tour of city 50 baht taxi right here."
Anyway, we're mostly over our jet lag and can sleep at night. Still tend to wake up at 4 AM though so that has become a good time to get caught up on organizing notes (and blogging).
Oh, amazing food here. The food is nearly worth the trip all by itself!

philosophy, departure, dog, travel
Hey, it was a cool song! Anyway, my ride to the airport is due any minute now. In the chaos and confusion, I think I packed too much stuff and I'm sure I forgot something. Ended up packing the shirt I was going to wear this morning.
Our German shepherd has been glaring at me all morning. She can tell I'm headed somewhere and knows I'm the only one that's going cuz the rest of the family isn't packing anything. She's very intuitive that way and figures out pretty much anything.
Dogs are great. They don't care where the family is going as long as they get to go along with their pack too. People get all worried about what it's going to be like and what they'll do but I think they're right. It's the people you get to hang out with along the way that makes the most difference.

Intro, asia, travel
Sometimes things just poleaxe you right between the eyes. Decided to create a blog, first thing I had to do was give it a name. Perhaps it was just a combination of a long day and the lateness of the hour, but the best I could come up with was Time and Space. We never seem to have enough of either. And, OK, I like science...
Been getting ready for a trip to Asia. Since I'm in Idaho, that makes for a very long journey. I never seem to come to the end of my list of things to do. What to take, what to get fixed up. Make sure all the bills are paid that might come due while I'm gone. Only one day left now so pretty soon, ready or not, the preparations will end.
