Meldorf Hafen/Meldorf Harbour
Sunday, 30. August 2009, 13:18:52
Yesterday I went to Meldorf Hafen. The idea was to go swimming, sit in the sun blah blah. Unfortunately it was a biiiiitttt too cold/windy and NOT a typical Summer's day. The sky was mostly overcast, the wind didn't stop, I wore flip flops and had cold feet the whole day....BUT it was still fun!!!

SUMMER
Meldorf Harbour is a very popular spot for wind and kite surfers.
A kite surfer.
After watching the surfers for a while, we drove around the corner to the bathing beach. We got out of the car and as we were about to lock the car, the rain started.
We jumped back into the car and decided to eat some lunch. Rolls with Frikadellen (rissoles/meatballs). Frikadellen are extremely cheap. 500g cost around 1.75 Euro.
The beach is a 'Wiesestrand' which means 'meadow beach'. There is some grass, a footpath, rocks and then water. There are some sheep on the grass too./I]
No beach is complete without a Strandkorb, 'beach basket'. Someone had kindly left the beach baskets unlocked so we were able to sit in them for free
Sheep on the beach. You are probably thinking that they run around the beach, eat and then dispose their waste all over the beach. Yes and no. The sheep live in a fenced off area of the beach, so the swimming/people part of the beach is very clean. People are employed to keep the beach clean, and therefore there is a beach fee.
While walking along the beach we bumped into a Watt tour group/mudflat tour group. We joined and learnt about mussles, crabs, worms and water. It was really windy and quite cold, but this meant that the water seemed VERY warm.
Some animals that can be found in the mudflats. The mud was sooo soft and it felt really nice to walk in it
After the tour, we prepared a small picnic for ourselves in the strandkorb. If it is windy, you simply move another strandkorb next to your strandkorb and then you have a cosy place to sit.
Yum egg roll!

Some Germans are really tough. When most people are rugged up in jackets, one German decided to go into the COLD water. Other people, rugged up in jackets and beanies stood on the beach and watched him
To sum it up, I would say that yesterday was a really great day! The weather doesn't need to be all warm and sunny in order to have a great time at the beach.
