October 14: Lunch on a budget

Potatoes with ham, onion and feta cheese

This meal is very cheap and it tastes ok, although I wouldn't want to eat it everyday.

1. Boil potatoes and carrots.
2. Chop onion and ham and fry in a pan.
3. Add boiled potatoes and carrots.
4. Season with salt, pepper and rosemary.
5. The end.

I met with a French couchsurfer in the evening. We went to Cafe MAY and ate cake. My cake was 2 Euros and I paid with a 2 Euro coin and for some reason got 3 Euro change :|

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight I'm on the guest list for the Eskimo Joe concert. I hope they'll play some of their old songs, because I don't know their new ones.

I've started packing my room and I think all my stuff will fit into my suitcase. I threw out a lot of my stuff before I came to Hamburg. It's kind of sad to pack up my room...but it's time to go back to Adelaide, where it is warmer and where most things are free....those are the only positives I can think of at the present moment. I feel I'll have minimal friends when I go back. There are some people who I believe I will be able to 'connect' with, who I don't know very well....and I don't think I have anything in common anymore with the people who I know well. Hmm. Yep.

That's "reverse culture shock". I found it harder to deal with than the culture shock of moving somewhere new. At least you are already aware of it.

I'm aware of it, but not sure what to do to minimize the emotional effect. What did you do to help? Perhaps my uni offers counselling.

Oh and add the cheese to the top of the potatoes.
Ha, I was quicker than you, anonymous commenter

For awhile everyone will be happy to see you and hear your stories then comes a time when you realize no one is listening anymore! It's because you've changed more than they have and they can't relate. The most important thing is to be aware of it and not take it personally. It's also a part of growing up and realizing that things don't remain the same; you have new experiences and new friends. I didn't deal with my reverse culture shock very well and that's why I went back to China three more times! What helped me was to move to a new city and start a brand new job where no one knew me. I still keep in contact with my old friends but not as much as before. I also know that keeping my Opera blog helped a lot because it was in China that I started it. Friends that I met through my blog when in China are still my friends now. Yay Opera.

Yes that's true. Some people may also get sick of listening to my stories because in the time that I experienced many things, they did nothing/not as much and may feel jealous. They also can't relate as the longest they have been overseas was 3 weeks and they lived in a hotel in this time.
I can't move to a new city very quickly, but I think being friends with Germans at my uni will help.

That's a great idea!
