Switzerland: land of chocolate factories and banks

, , , ...

I told someone I was going to Switzerland and he asked me 'Why? To see a bank?!'. Funnily enough, I didn't see many banks. I also asked at the tourist information office if there were tours of chocolate factories. Nope. The closest chocolate factory was 3 hours away, in Italy :|

Anyway, last weekend I was in Zuerich, Switzerland. I don't think I'll go back there anytime soon. It was unfortunately a very expensive weekend, eventhough I didn't pay anything for accommodation! An ICE train ticket to Switzerland and back will set you back around 75 Euro, if you have BahnCard 50. If you ever stay in Germany for a decent amount of time, buy a BahnCard 50. It allows you to purchase train tickets for half the normal price.

Miss E and I were in Zuerich during POT PLANT FESTIVAL!!!!

When I arrived back to my empty apartment (the removal guys had taken everything, including my mobile phone charger *annoyed*), I found someone on my bed!!!!

A weekend 282km away

, , , ...

I like to write in 3rd person....so:

Last Friday, Miss Kimbers traveled 282km (according to maps.google.de) with a Mitfahrgelegenheit, her favourite form of travel. Her personal driver was called Thomas, and the other traveler was called Bettina. They drove and drove...and drove through some snow and then some rain...and some more snow. After 3 hours, they arrived in Neuss, where Miss Kimbers caught the train to Duesseldorf. Everyone always has an 'amazed' reaction when Miss Kimbers tells them she is from Australia. From her accent, Thomas thought she was from England or France

Miss Kimbers met her favourite German at his work...and then they went to a patrol station and got a Bounty icecream! They taste sooo good  ...icecreamy and bountyity.... :| Then they walked (briskly) to the train station, only to realise that the trian was late. Good ol' DB! They got home and ate ROSENHOKL

Saturday:
Miss Kimbers and her favourite German woke up early, and went out into the cold to collect a package from the post office. Turns out that some banks in Germany send you pens, if you start an account with them.

The two then took the tram to the Alt Stadt and ate breakfast in Zicke. Why? Because Miss Kimbers had never had breakfast in a place other than a house/apartment/flat before. And, because it's nice to go out for breakfast Unfortunately, the staff cannot cook customers soft boiled eggs. The eggs must be hard boiled.

Most expensive orange juice I have ever had: 3.10 Euro=6.14079 AUD

After eating breakfast in Zicke, the two walked down the street, along the Rhein and to the art school. There was an open day, 'showcasing' all the work of the students. Miss Kimbers didn't understand the reasoning behind 99.9999 % of the art work there...

They have the same sponge as my housemate and me!!!

Ok, I wont *looks at light bulb suspiciously

I have 'gebrochenes Deutsch' :D :D

VORSICHT ANANAS!!! Long story, about a pineapple on the back seat of a car, and the guy who owns the car saying 'vorsicht ananas'...and now, whenever I see a pineapple (ananas), I say 'vorsicht ananas'. Oh, well the story, isn't that long, is it?

Ok, so you're an art student, and you realise you have an assignment due tomorrow...go to your garage, find the box of your old toys...and then rip them apart and make something. A+!

Miss Kimbers and her favourite German then headed back home and along the way, they went to the juice shop. Yum JUICE! Juice makes Miss Kimbers happy. At the Bahnhof (station), Kimbers' favourite German said something and Miss Kimbers didn't understand:

Miss Kimbers: It's not my fault you can't speak English properly!! P:
Favourite German: If you're going to be mean to me, you can go back to your 'pretty city'* P:

Once at home, they drank coffee with biscuits and chocolates (The Favourite German of Miss Kimbers gave her some yummy chocolates!! :D )...and watched Ratalouille in GERMAN and then Så som i himmelen (As it is in Heaven), which is a Swedish film, in GERMAN :D Oh, they also ate fetta cheese too

Sunday:
The two ate more biscuits and a yummy breakfast...and drank coffee...ate chocolates and watched the Body Guard...in GERMAN!

Miss Kimbers is tryingto be German. Lesson 1: sit in the kitchen a lot

A fridge next to an oven...that makes sense

The clock ticked too fast and then it was time for Miss Kimbers to return to her 'pretty city'. It was snowing outside and the Favourite German let Miss Kimbers take his umbrella

*Miss Kimbers' city is not pretty. It got ruined/burnt/destroyed in WW2, and then quickly rebuilt, so it's kind of...ugly...

Today, I plan on finding the big wall with the big monkey painted on the side of it. I think I walked along the wrong railway line yesterday. Then I hope to have coffee with one girl form Sydney

I can also go to the ATM! At the moment, I only have 7 Euro in my wallet. I have been withdrawing money from my Australian account using my card. Every time I withdraw money, I am charged $5 as a fee, plus an INTERNATIONAL fee of $23-$30. So, I got myself a German bank account and transferred my money over to it, so that I don't have to pay any more ridiculously high fees!

Choc-orange cake

Choc Orange Cake

I like oranges. I like cake. I like chocolate.

I made this cake last night. It's VERY simple

You will need:
100g butter (or spread- I used spread)
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 tablespoons of cocoa dissolved in 2 tablespoons of boiling water
zest of 1 orange
2/3 cup self-raising flour, sifted
2 tablsepoons of orangejuice (from the orange above)

What you need to do
  • Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius
  • Grease a cake tin (around 20cm in diameter) and line the base with baking paper
  • Cream the butter and sugar.
  • Add the eggs and mix.
  • Mix in the cocoa and orange zest.
  • Mix in the flour and the orangejuice
  • Place the mixture into the cake tin and bake it for 45 minutes
  • Cool the cake in the tin.

You can make an orange icing for the cake if you want to. All you need is some icing sugar and orangejuice, heat it on the stove until it is at your desired thickness.

(The basic idea for this recipe was taken from 'Cake Bible' 2006, Penguin Books)

Yummmmmm. Fruit! With porridge and sultana, it's even better  That spoon is my favourite spoon. Eating breakfast using another spoon just isn't the same :frown:

Our cat has a new friend; the frypan. We got a new frypan(1) so the old one has been sitting on the floor for the last week :worried: At least the cat still likes the old frypan. What a nice cat!

(1) Woah, what's happening? It all started with a NEW KETTLE! Then a new toothbrush....then new slippers...then a new table and now a new frypan! :eyes: Don't forget the 'new'/second hand suitcase on wheels either! p:

I have great news to tell you, but that will have to wait until next time

White Chocolate Coconut Mud Cake

, , , ...

Last night I went to a farewell dinner. I felt special because there were only 7 guests (and I was one of them and I was the only Aussie)

I baked a cake to take with me (ooo look, I'm a poet!). I do love to bake! But I don't bake cakes just for anyone. I only bake for 'cakeworthy' people

Here's the recipe if you want to try it. I found it in a magazine a few years ago.

CAKE
You need:
  • 250g butter, chopped
  • 150g white chocolate, chopped
  • 2 cups caster sugar (or normal sugar)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1.25 cups plain flour
  • 0.5 cup self-raising flour
  • 2 teaspoons coconut essence
  • 0.25 cup desiccated coconut
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten

1. Grease a cake tin. Line sides with baking paper. ( If you're using a loaf tin, halve the recipe. If using a round tin with diameter 20-23cm, don't halve the recipe.)
2. Butter, chocolate, sugar and milk into a saucepan. Cook and stir over low heat until the mixture is smooth. Do not boil!
3. Transfer the mixture into a big bowl and let it cool for 15 minutes.
4. Whisk (or use a fork like me) in flours, coconut, coconut essence, vanilla extract and eggs.
5. Pour into the cake tin.
6. Cook in an oven for 2 hours at 160 degrees Celsius. After 1 hour of cooking, place foil loosely over the cake. (this stops it from drying). Let the cake cool in the cake tin before putting it on a plate.

Topping
  • 0.5 cup thickened cream
  • 300g white chocolate finely chopped
  • 0.5 teaspoon coconut essence

7. Pour cream into a saucepan and bring to boil. Remove from heat and stir in coconut essence and white chocolate. Stir until chocolate has melted.
8. Transfer this into a bowl and place in the fridge for around 20 minutes, or until the mixture is spreadable.

"Did you bake this?"

"I'm going to have another piece"

Unfortunately, I didn't take a photo.... :frown:
