Building a house

Thursday:
Miss Kimbers and her favourite German finished the Nussecke by dipping the corners into melted chocolate. They then looked for a cool place, where they could store the biscuits, so that the chocolate wouldn't melt.

Miss Kimbers cooled the biscuits on the window sill. She thought that only existed in fairy tales!

When you require a tray, but don't have one, simply use a cardboard box! :D

Mr S and Miss Kimbers ate lunch in a cafeteria on the 10th floor of a building

That evening, the two travelled some kms away, to...BUILD A HOUSE!

Friday:
Miss Kimbers installed installation into the walls of the house. Her Favourite German taught her how to use a cordless drill

Miss Kimbers is unfortunately VERY weak and cannot carry heavy things...Therefore, she does not think she should become a builder anytime soon. However, she thought it was fun.

Saturday:
Mr S and Miss Kimbers travelled back to the apartment of Miss Kimbers. That evening, they went to the cinema and watched Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood. It was a good movie. Then they went to a bar and drank KiBa and Martini. There were free matches in the bar.

*Miss Kimbers takes a box of matches*
Mr S: Why do you need matches?
Miss Kimbers: Because one day, I might decide to buy a candle, and then I'll need matches....

The topic of the walk home: Why do people go out to bars and nightclubs and, being social. (This could be a future blog post topic!)

Sunday:
Mr S and Miss Kimbers ate a hearty German style breakfast...and there was VEGEMITE, Australia's favourite bread spread

Mmmmmm VEGEMITE

Normal salt, herb salt...black pepper or mixed pepper? AHH So much CHOICE!

Residence Permit

, , , ...

Did you know, it has been 90 days since I left Australia?! Well, I did because if I didn't get my residence permit today, I'd be here ILLEGALLY! :eyes:

I thought I'd need to show MY bank account, as well as the bank account of my parents, but nope. For some reason, the woman kept thinking that MY money in MY bank account, was money from my parents...No, you see, I worked hard for my money, unlike some people who scab everything from their parents...oh wait, that's what I do in Australia! :left:

My residence permit...Yep, that's me

Could I be turning German....?

  • I speak a mix of German and English here. I like to call it 'Germlish'

Some guy: Hey, I heard you are from Australia...
Me: Yep
Some guy: How long have you been here?
Me: I have been in Germany since 3 months....wait....That's bad English!!

I even use little tissues...like German people!
  • I go to the BIO bakery to buy bread...and then to Aldi to buy cheap stuff...and then to other supermarkets to buy what wasn't in Aldi.
  • I take my backpack shopping with me, so that I don't have to pay for a plastic bag
  • I have used the community glass bins: one bin is for green glass, one is for brown glass and one if for white.
  • I own sliced ham!
  • I hang out and eat in the kitchen
  • I now use salt on boiled egg

Why I am not turning German:

  • I don't eat chocolate sprinkles on bread for breakfast...I do not mix chocolate sprinkles with nutella and put it on bread for breakfast...
  • I don't think I know 17 ways of cooking potatoes...well, I could find out
  • I don't sit outside and eat icecream when it is a 'warm' 12 degrees.
  • People don't think I am German. They think I am from Holland, or France.
  • I watched 'Dinner for One' on New Years Eve and didn't like it. It's NOT funny!
  • I don't put enormous amounts of butter on everything. I don't even OWN butter!
  • I think a one hour train trip is short
  • I find it hard to open German doors with keys

News from number 5

, , , ...

I live at number 5....

What is new at number 5?

Miss Kimbers went shopping at Aldi and bought all of this stuff for just 7 Euro. All this stuff should last for a week...SHOULD....

My animals

Samba is probably better than Nutella...and crunchy. Well, for 5 Euro something=9.91009 AUD, you'd want it to taste good. It's 'BIO', or as we say in Australia 'organic'. Germans are relaly into the whole 'bio' thing...there are 'bio' supermarkets everywhere.

I can't eat the BIO porridge anymore. It has all kinds of seeds mixed in with it and it tastes so...'bird food-y-ish'? Today, I ate 3 spoonfuls of porridge and had to throw it in the bin...and then I ended up eating Samba and Pfluemli (plum jam) on bread :D

Uni:
I was late for class yesterday.

Today, I had a 45 minute class. I talked to one person, who said he had friends from Australia, from Adelaide. And then I said that was where I am from. Then he said he once had a girlfriend from Mt Barker, and asked me if I knew Mt Barker and I said 'Yes' and then he was like 'Woah...'

I write emails to teachers, and they never write back....

Tomorrow, I have 2 classes.

Thursday and Friday, I have free

Weather
It snowed yesterday. I woke up and everything was white. I woke up today and there was no snow *HAPPY*

Other
I'm going to Duesseldorf on Thursday to see what Karneval is, to learn about GERMAN CULTURE (hey, I have been sitting in the kitchen a lot, trying to be German...and I even bought little tissues...). I'm stopping in Koeln, so I might see what is happening there. I have no idea what Karneval is. All I know is, people dress up and...I don't know...walk around? At the moment there are all kids of costumes in the shops for Karneval. However, I'm in money saving mode and will not purchase a custome.

In Adelaide, we only have a Christmas parade. It's the biggest of it's type in the southern hemisphere ooooo ahhhhh. In Sydney, there is a big parade for those who...bat for the other team. We also have parades for those who fought in wars.

In the Rhineland festivities developed especially strongly, since it was a way to express subversive anti-Prussian and anti-French thoughts in times of occupation, through parody and mockery

(Wikipedia)
O....k....

Carnival Thursday is called "Altweiber" (old women) in Düsseldorf or "Wieverfastelovend" (The women's day) in Cologne, in many places Carnival-"fools" take over city halls or municipal government, "wild" women cut men's ties wherever they get hold of them.

Be Facebook friends with your uni tutor

My uni tutor (who is here from Canada eh), was selling his suitcase on Facebook  It was only $50 and it's perfectly fine!! At the shops, you're only able to buy a small case for $50.

It has WHEELS!!! :D My old suitcase has broken wheels and is really hard to move around.

Someone has been in my room...putting my shoes into a line... :left:

This is what you buy a Swedish girl for her birthday :D

At 5.30 today I went to the post box and sent my exchange application passport sized photos. I'm so poor that I took the photos myself  I learnt how to control the crop tool too! So now I've just got to wait for 3-6 weeks to see if I am successful.... :wait: If not, I'm going to CRY!

Nearly there

, , , ...

I got a reference for my exchange application

So now all that is left for me to organise:
  • Get new bank account- I got internet banking now. I'm sooo happy with my financial situation!(I'm going to write a blog post on saving money soon. It's easier than you think  )
  • 2 passport sized photos of myself
  • Fill in the exchange application form
  • Send the form
  • Fill in the scholarship form
  • Send the form
  • Go to the travel agent - this will be my most expensive purchase ever!
  • Don't get fired from my job
  • Buy a suitcase from my uni tutor- He's selling one that has been used once for $50; in the shops they are $100+. It has WHEELS! Everything should be on wheels.

I got a free lunch today thanks to my university

Back to school...or uni as I call it

, , , ...

After a month of doing nothing (getting up at 10am, staying in my PJs all day...) I went back to uni today.

The bus was full. The bus is my enemy. I day dream on the bus. I like short sentences P: I like toast with honey. I like honey crackles. Snap crackle pop

My only class today was law. It wasn't very interesting and I nearly fell asleep.

It is expected that you know about the:
Common law system and doctrine of precedent
Common law and equity law
Interplay between general and statutory law
Basic law of contract
Law of agency

:eyes: *doesn't remember*

I went pretty well. I got 2 credits and 2 distinctions....I got a credit for Finance!! 50% of people fail it!

This semester I'm doing two 3rd year (final year) courses *scared* But, I think it'll be ok

Oh, I never told you all that the commerce director guy said I can go on exchange. He said that I'm a 'splendid candidate for exchange' :D So now I'm trying to find the cheapest way to get to Germany  I just need to get my dad to read my exchange application form. Then get someone who works at uni to write a reference for me. Hmm and I need to send them 2 passport sized photos. Am I supposed to smile? Should it be a passport mugshot?

Can I draw a passport sized photo of myself?

I'm sitting here eating Cadbury 'Duo' chocolate. It's dark chocolate with milk chocolate on the top  But I have no one to eat it with :frown: It's no fun getting fat by yourself.

Old man, Work, Money, Tagged

Scary old man
As usual, I took the bus to work on Saturday night. We stopped at a bus stop and an old, scary, fat man got on the bus:
*please don't sit next to me, please don't sit next to me, please don't sit next to me*
Then he sat next to me :bomb: He smelt like cigarettes....
Old, Scary Fat Man 'How yar goin' luv?' (for the readers from non English speaking backgrounds it means 'How are you going love?')
*I don't want to talk to you! Why are you calling me 'love' you freak!?'*
'I'm good thanks' *Err no, I'm actually really really not-good!*
'Where yar going? Out with yar friends?'
'I'm going to work'
'Where yar work?'
*Ugh as if I'm going to tell you where I work!*
'In a bar' *Can't you tell I don't want to speak to you!?*
'When do you finish work?'
'Late'
Then he fell asleep....Then I had to get off the bus. When the bus stopped, I stood up..
'Excuse me....excuse me....*Ugh!* EXCUSE ME!!!!'
He STILL didn't wake up, so I had to poke him :yuck: He then woke up and took sooo long to actually stand up and let me out of the bus.

Work
Work was really busy and I was in the downstairs bar and there was only one other bar girl behind the bar with me. Everyone was getting upset 'Ugh I've been waiting for EVER' etc etc. Well, it's not my fault! People should have their money ready when they pay and KNOW what drinks they want. When I serve, I go from right to left and then left to right, so if you were smart, you'd just sneak in.

I got $8 in tips  That's 4.7 Euro.

Money
I worked as a student guide today. Yes, the best job EVER! :D There were lots of students to help for the first hour, then they all went to information sessions for the rest of the day. I sat at the desk working out some important things. How much money do I have to spend if I go on exchange for 7 months? How much money will I have each week? What is the exchange rate? How much money am I currently making by sitting here doing nothing? I worked out how to get a decimal place on my phone *feels proud*

Here are my workings. These assume that I don't get fired and are approximations of the worst case scenario (only working 4.6 hours a week when I work more, not getting a scholarship which I probably wont get anyway and that none of my German connections find a nice family for me to live with)

Wow, the exchange rate is soooo bad. I thought it was 0.64 Euros=$1AUD, but it's 0.5880 Euros= $1AUD :eyes:

I'd have around 672.81 Euros per month. If rent was $270/month (or is it per WEEK? :ko: Lets hope not!) then I'd have around 100 Euro per week for food, bus tickets etc P:. Do you think this is enough? I CAN live on rice and water...extrememly CHEAP rice too

I need more money. I should participate in a clinical trial of a new drug *light bulb lights up* I know one guy who apparently got $7000AUD for a two week trial!! :yikes: Unfortunately, the medical people are always looking for men, morbidly obese people, people with high blood pressure or women over 50 :frown:
