Lately...

, , , ...

Some things that have happened lately:

  • I got sick at work on Saturday night. I wasn't feeling well so I drank a lot of water. I still didn't feel well. Then everything started getting darker...and I got dizzy...my skin felt like it had ants crawling over it... Sat down for a while and still felt horrible, so I went home. I feel better now though

  • On Friday, I was at a masked ball (although I didn't wear a mask). I learnt that it's really hard to walk in high shoes if you have tights on, because they make the shoes slippery.

  • This Friday, there is a BIG party at a mansion in Adelaide (100+ people). The theme is 'dress as something beginning with F'. I was going to go as a fax machine...but I changed my mind and will now be a fairy.

  • I'm still doing exercise WOAH!! :D I can now run without getting puffed out after 1 minute

  • I have been accepted to a German university as an exchange student *jump jump*

  • In 1 month, I'll be in Germany :D

  • I have exams in 2 weeks...I've started learning but it's going to be hard because all my subjects are FINAL YEAR subjects and I'm not in my final year :frown:

That's all for today. Take care of yourselves and make sure to read 'use by' labels

'Tackling climate change head-on'

, , ,

My mum handed me a letter today, and I thought 'Oooo someone has written me a letter!' :D

However, that was not so and my happy face soon turned to a :irked: . It was a letter from Senator Kirk, a Labor Senator for South Australia.

Since many resources had been used to print the letter, I thought that I should at least read it.

The Senator writes 'John Howard has dropped the ball on issues like climate change'. Her party will 'tackle climate change head-on' Hmmmm.... I wonder how many people got these letters, which don't appear to be made from recycled paper...

  • Climate change is related to the greenhouse effect which is caused by emissions from factories/cars. CO2 absorbs heat energy radiated from the earth. This trapped radiation can then cause an increase in the temperature of the atmosphere, which is known as the greenhouse effect.
  • Paper is made in a factory.
  • Paper is from trees...when you knock down trees, there is an increase in the amount of CO2 in the air, as there are not as many trees to photosynthesize, or to turn the CO2 into oxygen.
  • Printers which print letters are made in factories.
  • The factory workers might drive cars to work.
  • The printers and paper are delivered to shops/offices by trucks.
  • The trucks and cars push out harmful chemicals (CO2 and others) into the air.
  • The letter were delivered to my houses by a motorbike!
  • The envelope has a plastic part on the front-plastic is made from petroleum products, a non renewable resource! The first line of the letter is 'Do you worry about the future of this country?' Well I do now, because you're using non renewable resources to send unwanted letters to me!

Think of all the other resources that were used to deliver this letter to me! Water, Energy, Ink... Grrrrr

Ok another thing I have noticed... (yeah i don't have anything better to do!)
'I am working hard to deliver: A national broadband network-that delivers broadband speeds 40 times faster so Australia isn't left behind......' The letter then goes on to explain that Kirk and someone else in the party will 'fight hard for a better future for YOUNG Australians'

Right, last week, I read that South Australian children and Australian children are pretty obese. I can't find that article, but here is another one:

"Australian children are growing fatter at a rapid rate. The number of overweight children has doubled in recent years. Causes of obesity in children include unhealthy food choices, lack of physical activity and family eating habits."

Lack of physical activity hey? Imagine if every young person in Australia had really fast broadband internet! They'd sit in front of it all day. You see, even when you have a slow internet connection, you'd still do a bit of exercise. When you get frustrated that a download is taking 5 minutes instead of 1, you will usually express your feelings using non-verbal communication. This may include the waving of arms in the air or the hitting of your computer with a fist-fight burning stuff! One may get sooooo frustrated that one may decide to cancel the download and WALK to the lounge room to do something else. Walking to the lounge room will increase the daily number of steps for that person.

Secondly, what would a young person/child need an extremely fast broadband connection for? Oh that's right, doing their HOMEWORK and for researching their thesis; 'The ethics behind the self-serve buffet bar'.

Well, I will do MY party for the environment and I will do my part to provide young Aussies with a better future by RECYCLING the letter
