Apfel-Tarte

, , , ...

I have noticed that many people say 'I am bad at baking'. I don't understand this! Baking is so easy. If you are one of these 'I am bad at baking' people, try this recipe. It is VERY simple and the ingredients will cost you less than 5 Euros.

Apfel-Tarte

You need:
300g flour
1 table spoon sugar
1 pinch of salt
200g butter
1 egg
3 apples

The recipe said you need to make the base on the kitchen bench, but I made it in a bowl so I 1. didn't need to clean the kitchen bench before and 2. didn't need to clean the kitchen bench after

Place flour in a bowl and make a well in the middle. Place sugar and salt in the well...and then add the egg. Cut the butter into little cubes and place into the bowl. Now kind of stab all the ingredients with a spoon. You wont be able to MIX it as it is too dry. After a while, you should be able to use your hands to make a dough. Wrap the lump of dough in plastic wrap and place it into the fridge.

While the dough is cooling....
1. Line a spring form baking tin with baking paper. I used a spring form tin, but if you have a special tarte tin (an Obstkuchenform), then use that.
2. Thinly slice the apples. I used Barebraun (I think that is how it is spelt) and Granny Smith apples.

Once that is done, your dough should be cool. Take it out of the fridge and line the tin with the dough. Make sure to make some edges. Also, poke the dough with a fork. I did not do this and a large air bubble formed in the middle of my cake while it was in the oven.

Arrange your apples on top of the dough and sprinkle a bit of sugar over the top. Cook for 15-20 minutes at 250 degrees C.

(This recipe is from this German book)

Speaking of German books...I read a German novel last week and this week I started another one and have about 15 pages to go

Park

, , , ...

On Sunday I went to the park 'Planten un Blomen' where I sat in the sun and read a book. Unfortunately I sat in a wet patch on the grass (either caused by someone spilling a drink there or a dog...hmmm...) The park is a short walk from S-Bahnhof Dammtor (there was a Beatles welcome here in the 60s and fans were aparantly sprayed with water because they were too crazy) or U-Bahnhof Stephanzplatz.

The Asian garden

The University of Hamburg has a 'botanical garden' in the park. I'm not sure if there is a garden or if the hot house IS the botanical garden. Anyway, I went into the hot house. It is FREE but HOT.

An Australian tree! It was so small and scrawny.

And now it's time for a new segment....
Random photo from the PAST

This is certainly random. I THINK this is a picture of some parts of a burnt cake in the bin...but since I am not sure...I will have to select another random photo.

It is Karneval during February in Duesseldorf

Residence Permit

, , , ...

Did you know, it has been 90 days since I left Australia?! Well, I did because if I didn't get my residence permit today, I'd be here ILLEGALLY! :eyes:

I thought I'd need to show MY bank account, as well as the bank account of my parents, but nope. For some reason, the woman kept thinking that MY money in MY bank account, was money from my parents...No, you see, I worked hard for my money, unlike some people who scab everything from their parents...oh wait, that's what I do in Australia! :left:

My residence permit...Yep, that's me

Could I be turning German....?

  • I speak a mix of German and English here. I like to call it 'Germlish'

Some guy: Hey, I heard you are from Australia...
Me: Yep
Some guy: How long have you been here?
Me: I have been in Germany since 3 months....wait....That's bad English!!

I even use little tissues...like German people!
  • I go to the BIO bakery to buy bread...and then to Aldi to buy cheap stuff...and then to other supermarkets to buy what wasn't in Aldi.
  • I take my backpack shopping with me, so that I don't have to pay for a plastic bag
  • I have used the community glass bins: one bin is for green glass, one is for brown glass and one if for white.
  • I own sliced ham!
  • I hang out and eat in the kitchen
  • I now use salt on boiled egg

Why I am not turning German:

  • I don't eat chocolate sprinkles on bread for breakfast...I do not mix chocolate sprinkles with nutella and put it on bread for breakfast...
  • I don't think I know 17 ways of cooking potatoes...well, I could find out
  • I don't sit outside and eat icecream when it is a 'warm' 12 degrees.
  • People don't think I am German. They think I am from Holland, or France.
  • I watched 'Dinner for One' on New Years Eve and didn't like it. It's NOT funny!
  • I don't put enormous amounts of butter on everything. I don't even OWN butter!
  • I think a one hour train trip is short
  • I find it hard to open German doors with keys

A friend sent these photos to me and I think they are pretty cool  What do you think?

NEW WORD

Muscle sprouts= Brussel sprouts :D
Start using this word and lets see if we can get it added into the dictionary

Bay to Birdwood

, , , ...

The Bay to Birdwood is held each year. This year the 'drive' was for vehicles manufactured on or before 31 December 1955. The start is by the sea and the finish is a picnic event at Birdwood, a village in the hills and home to the 'National Motor Museum'. The distance is 70km.

If you just thought 'Hey, Kimbers doesn't even like cars!' well, you're right :D Cars don't interest me in the slightest.

Better explanation:

The Bay to Birdwood Run for historic motoring vehicles, is the largest most continually staged event of its kind anywhere in the world with an average of 1500-1600 entrant vehicles including cars, motorcycles, trucks and vans.

What did you do on Sunday? I sat on the side of a road with a glass of wine and watched cars drive past

Happy looking people in a green car

The event is not just for cars. If you own an old bike or FIRE ENGINE, you can probbaly enter

Someone didn't want their photo taken...probably knew it would end up on a blog and wanted to protect his identity

I've got so many assignments to do  Back to work....

Everything I have done in life, has gotten me to...topic 4

, , , ...

While doing Finance homework, I had a profound thought

Have you ever seen Run Lola Run or Sliding Doors (I haven't seen it but I think the idea is similar)? Every choice you makes changes your future. Every choice you have ever made has gotten you to this point; reading my blog. If you walked to work instead of driving, if you cat puked on the floor at 3am, if your phone directory was delivered this morning, if YOU were ON the phone directory....your life would be slightly/completely different.

Possibly the best choice I made (well, my dad probably made it for me) was to learn German.

Here is a Diagram.docof how learning German affected my life. There is a lot more to put on here, but it wont fit on one page. As you can see, if I didn't learn German, I wouldn't have a blog  (don't cry, it's ok P: )

I find it all quite interesting
