It's getting warmer here!!!

German girls are pretty tough. Yesterday, I saw quite a few wearing dresses/skirts WITHOUT stockings! The outdoor part of the icecream cafe was full today. The icecream cafes are sooo cool! In Australia, we have icecream shops. There you can buy an icecream cone and a drink. However, in Germany, you can actually sit down on a chair and eat a bog bowl of icecream, a sunday, some pancakes, drink a hot drink, a milkshake or some alcohol. However, a sunday can cost 7 or 8 Euros...

Anyway, I went to the shops to find myself a skirt because I am sick of wearing trousers. It is sooo hard to find my size here!

I like this skirt, but I don't think my shoes and stockings look good with it....

My finance lecturer always says 'subStract' instead of 'subtract' and it annoys me.
Everyone also says 'salvation' instead of 'salvage' (as in salvage value of an asset)...can salvation be used in this context?

Yesterday there was an International Dinner at uni. You had to cook/make something from your country for people to try. I made fairy bread :wink: There was sushi, crepes, Pierogi!!! Pierogi are pretty easy to make!

On Monday I went to the bar around the corner with Miss D. The bar is really cool, as there are games there for everyone to play. We played Backgammon :smile: Deni has been playing Backgammon for 15 years and is really really good, so I learnt some tricks;)

Onions, they're more interesting than you think! :D

News from number 5

, , , ...

I live at number 5....

What is new at number 5?

Miss Kimbers went shopping at Aldi and bought all of this stuff for just 7 Euro. All this stuff should last for a week...SHOULD....

My animals :smile:

Samba is probably better than Nutella...and crunchy. Well, for 5 Euro something=9.91009 AUD, you'd want it to taste good. It's 'BIO', or as we say in Australia 'organic'. Germans are relaly into the whole 'bio' thing...there are 'bio' supermarkets everywhere.

I can't eat the BIO porridge anymore. It has all kinds of seeds mixed in with it and it tastes so...'bird food-y-ish'? Today, I ate 3 spoonfuls of porridge and had to throw it in the bin...and then I ended up eating Samba and Pfluemli (plum jam) on bread :D

Uni:
I was late for class yesterday.

Today, I had a 45 minute class. I talked to one person, who said he had friends from Australia, from Adelaide. And then I said that was where I am from. Then he said he once had a girlfriend from Mt Barker, and asked me if I knew Mt Barker and I said 'Yes' and then he was like 'Woah...'

I write emails to teachers, and they never write back....

Tomorrow, I have 2 classes.

Thursday and Friday, I have free :smile:

Weather
It snowed yesterday. I woke up and everything was white. I woke up today and there was no snow *HAPPY*

Other
I'm going to Duesseldorf on Thursday to see what Karneval is, to learn about GERMAN CULTURE (hey, I have been sitting in the kitchen a lot, trying to be German...and I even bought little tissues...). I'm stopping in Koeln, so I might see what is happening there. I have no idea what Karneval is. All I know is, people dress up and...I don't know...walk around? At the moment there are all kids of costumes in the shops for Karneval. However, I'm in money saving mode and will not purchase a custome.

In Adelaide, we only have a Christmas parade. It's the biggest of it's type in the southern hemisphere ooooo ahhhhh. In Sydney, there is a big parade for those who...bat for the other team. We also have parades for those who fought in wars.

In the Rhineland festivities developed especially strongly, since it was a way to express subversive anti-Prussian and anti-French thoughts in times of occupation, through parody and mockery

O....k....

Carnival Thursday is called "Altweiber" (old women) in Düsseldorf or "Wieverfastelovend" (The women's day) in Cologne, in many places Carnival-"fools" take over city halls or municipal government, "wild" women cut men's ties wherever they get hold of them.

In my place

Welcome to my new home....

Part of my bedroom. Bed and pillow covers from the guy who lives here before, quilt and quilt cover by Ikea, photo by my favourite German.

The bathroom. Unlike other exchange students, I found my place using the internet and do not share a bathroom with 9 other people :D, just 1 other girl

The lounge room, for lounging about. Ahhh now you all know that I have pink slippers and can STALK me!!!

The kitchen: This is where all the food from Aldi* lives :wink:

The espresso cooker and oranges for porridge.

View from my window WOAH, beautiful *wipes away tear*

And that's my place :smile:

*Aldi is a German supermarket, selling a limited range of items at discount prices. A pack of tasty Choc Chip cookies is only 0.89 Euro!! And I eat a pack each week :thumbs:

Today I am going to FRANCE! (well, the town closest to the border, because I can go there for free) Later today, I am returning to GERMANY. Tomorrow, I am getting a lift with a complete stranger to DUESSELDORF *jump jump* :hat:

Lets start counting: 22 days

This is just a piece of marketing....

Nominations are open for the My Opera Awards .... I just realised these existed now!

Have my blog entries ever made you smile?
Have you learnt something about Aussie culture from my blog?
Have you learnt anything from my blog?
Has my blog amused you on rainy days when there is nothing to do and all your friends are hanging out with their significant other and don't have time for you?
Has my blog ever made you laugh?
Did you ever receive a prize from me, for winning a Christmas decoration competition? :wink:
Do you like it how my blog isn't just snippits from 'funny' stuff I found on the internet?
Do you think it's cool how I don't take emo photos of myself, play around with the saturation and put them on here?

If you answered YES to any of the above, why not nominate me for 'Best blog by a female''

It would be an honour for me to be nominated. You know, I don't know what I want to be when I 'grow up'...so maybe I can just be famous on the internet? P: You can make it possible!

PS:
Thank you to our friend [URL=http://my.opera.com/sanshan/blog/San, who nominated me :smile:

Lately...

Some things that have happened lately:

  • I got sick at work on Saturday night. I wasn't feeling well so I drank a lot of water. I still didn't feel well. Then everything started getting darker...and I got dizzy...my skin felt like it had ants crawling over it... Sat down for a while and still felt horrible, so I went home. I feel better now though :smile:

  • On Friday, I was at a masked ball (although I didn't wear a mask). I learnt that it's really hard to walk in high shoes if you have tights on, because they make the shoes slippery.

  • This Friday, there is a BIG party at a mansion in Adelaide (100+ people). The theme is 'dress as something beginning with F'. I was going to go as a fax machine...but I changed my mind and will now be a fairy.

  • I'm still doing exercise WOAH!! :D I can now run without getting puffed out after 1 minute :up:

  • I have been accepted to a German university as an exchange student *jump jump*

  • In 1 month, I'll be in Germany :D

  • I have exams in 2 weeks...I've started learning but it's going to be hard because all my subjects are FINAL YEAR subjects and I'm not in my final year :frown:

That's all for today. Take care of yourselves and make sure to read 'use by' labels :smile:

The Birthday

, , , ...

On Sunday I lost my teenager-hood. I also lost my voice. I don't know if it was from smoke or talking to loud...but my voice decided to go on holiday. It arrived back yesterday :smile: But now I'm a bit sick :frown:

Anyway, the birthday....I didn't have a party. I couldn't be bothered organising a party. So, as usual we went for lunch at my grandma's house.

After lunch, I asked my dad if he wanted to go for a walk up a hill. He said no, because it makes him too tired. So, I went by myself. It took me only 12 minutes to get to the top; no pauses! It used to take me mroe than 30 minutes!

Then, my sister and her 'friend' went for another walk with me in the evening. They must have felt sorry for me. I think my hobby is walking up hills. My dad thinks I should go in a walking competition :left:

View from half way up the hill

We took walkie talkies with us. We discovered that you can hear other people and talk to other people. We talked to a guy named Troy.

Then we went to McDonalds because I wanted to have an icecream. And because I can afford to eat icecream at McDonalds; $0.50/icecream :wink:

No, we didn't buy one for the Hoff. Yes, we were too lazy to get out of the car, so we got drive-through

Eating the icecream in the car, in the car park. Is that bogan? :left:

Then we went home and I did my assignment....and my auntie and uncle visited me.

But today was better than my birthday! Because, I got some mail from Germany, from my favourite German :D No one else got me such a nice present.... This parcel was a very special for Intersheep....because....

Intersheep's SISTER was inside!

Now I have three sheep in my flock :smile: I must have shown signs of being a good shepherd, and so that's why I have another sheep :wink:

This little sheep was very hungry and the first thing she did was run to the fridge...

Then she grabbed a spoon and ate lots of icecream. Next time, I'll just buy chocolate...

Today's German Lesson:
In today's lesson, we will learn some ingredients commonly used in 'Du bist ein Engel' German chocolate bars:

Vollmilch-Schokolade = full milk chocolate = milk chocolate
Zutaten = ingredients
Zucker = sugar
Kakaobutter = cocoa butter
Vollmilchpulver= full milk powder
Kakaomasse = cocoa mass
Suessmolkenpulver= I have no idea about what the English is. Sweet whey powder?
Milchzucker= lactose...milk sugar
Emulgator = emulsifying agent
Aroma: natuerliche Vanille= flavour: natural vanilla

Kann Spuren von Nuessen und Erdnuesen enthalten
= May contain traces of nuts and peanuts.
(German people, please explain Erdnuessen and Nuessen :smile: )

Now you should be able to understand some German chocolate bar wrappers :wink:

And now it's time for me to go to sleep.

Week 10 in photos

, , , ...

After 4 hours,I think I've finished my law assignment *jump* :D So now I can blog :smile: I'm doing a subject where we look at aspects of law affecting companies, under the wonderful Corporations Act 2001. For the exam, I have to print out the required sections of the act. One guy from my tutorial printed it out and it cost him $10 in print money!!

On Saturday night I commented on one girl's head band 'Hey, that's a nice headband!' and then she gave it to me :smile:

I'm still walking up the hill (you can see it in the distance here). I like the gates they have at this 'park': one for the human and a litle one for the dog :wink:

Some of the orchids are still flowering too. They get hardly any water here, the soil doesn't have any nutrients but they seem to grow somehow. If you tried to grow them in your garden at home, you'd fail miserably.

This is what the Adelaide traffic control centre looks like. Lots of screens

Fritz, the crazy German guy who you've never heard of before is ALREADY exporting Christmas Stollen to Australia! Actually, the Adelaide City council seems a bit crazy too; they've already put up Christmas decorations in the city centre (American/Canadian translation: downtown)!

Last night I cooked a recipe from 'Jamies Ministry of Food'; chicken with prosciutto. It tasted really good, except for the fact that the ham was really salty! Next time: unsalty ham.

And that concludes today's blog post. Now I've got to finish my accounting theory assignment.....

Ahh I nearly forgot! It's time for a German lesson :D
  • Ich esse gern Stollen=I like to eat stollen
  • ...wenn es Ihnen gerade passt=When it suits you. So you can say....'Sie koennen essen wenn es Ihnen gerade passt'??? (German people, please correct me if I am wrong :smile: ) And the impolite is 'Du kannst essen wenn es DIR gerade passt.????
  • Schutzengel= guardian angel So, 'Fahre nie schneller als dein Schutzengel fliegen kann'...which means 'Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly'
