Oct 19, 20: Birthday and Cake

My birthday and the visit to the packet cake factory

I received the first part of my birthday present on Saturday. We went to the theater to the premiere of "Just In Time". It was a dance performance and although I didn't really understand the story behind the dance, I enjoyed it

On Monday I turned 21. The day began with a Bounty Bar….there was a candle in it, so it was a birthday Bounty Bar  I received a book called “Die Moewe Jonathan”, about a seagull who likes to fly and it’s in German!!! :D

The birthday Bounty Bar and candle, without the Bounty Bar

I baked a cake and wanted to try a new cake. So, I made a pineapple upside down cake because I had never made one before and thought it would look interesting. I put the slices of pineapple on the bottom of a baking tin and then filled the tin with a butter cake mixture. Unfortunately I only tested the outside of the cake with a fork and didn’t realize that the middle was still runny.

For dinner I went to a restaurant with my favourite German. We ate bruschetta (I don't like the world bruschetta), fish and risotto. It was really yummy

On Tuesday we visited Dr Oetker, a packet cake factory in Bielefeld, although they produce more than just packet cakes. Dr Oetker also produces custard, jelly, frozen pizzas….We were even able to see the very first packet of Dr Oetker baking powder!!!! It lives in a blue cube and inside the blue cube it sits in a glass box on a red cushion.

I found the tour really interesting. We got to try some custard, learnt that over 1 millin pizzas are made each day and we got to eat some cake too….although, I find my cakes better (normally…when I bake them properly  )

A big pudding, from above

On the side of the big pudding you will find 3 pudding machines. These people are waiting for pudding (=custard in German)

The pudding machine. You place your cup on the holder, insert the end of the spoon into the red thing and press the button. The spoon will then start to spin and hot water will be poured into the cup. Next, custard powder will be put into the cup and within 45 seconds you will have custard

Rockclimbing using cake tins

An umbrella holder!!!! :D :D

Me and a cow

At the end of the tour, you can eat some packet cake and drink coffee/tea or water. During this time you can also send postcards for free to friends and family, telling them about your time at Dr Oetker :D

I enjoyed the tour  However, the price is a bit steep, at 8 Euro per person, seeing that it is just a marketing exercise for Dr Oetker.

After all the sugar we went to a Turkish shop and ate Turkish Pizza, or something similar.
