The Hearing Pill

When I begin to see the trouble my 87-year-old father has adapting to his new hearing aids, I pity those of the Gen X and Gen Y generations who'll learn or are discovering exactly the same problems in a much younger age. You may scoff at my words, but what you do not know can most surely harm you in this particular case.
The problem with hearing loss is the fact that it is permanent. And because those of the younger generations are listening to music at levels that make their homes quake and their vehicles shake, the damage they're inflicting upon themselves will happen much faster than it did for my father's generation or even that of the baby boomers. If this is happening to you, you'll find unfortunately no magic cures - no tablets, no surgery - that will improve your ability to hear. Injury to the ears from continuous exposure to loud music ensures that you'll experience irreversible hearing loss.
According to HeadWize, a headset reference site, 'Two types of hearing damage may be a consequence of exposure to loud noise: sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus. Sensorineural hearing loss occurs in the inner ear when high energy audio waves, rippling through ear liquid, over-stimulate and kill hair cells. When hair cells for a band of frequencies are destroyed, those frequencies are no more heard. In addition to being at the frontline of the cochleal sensor array, the high frequency hair cells will also be one of the most sensitive. It is perhaps not astonishing, then, that noise-induced hearing loss usually begins with the high frequencies in the 3kHz-6kHz range.'
Tinnitus, on the other hand, refers to a permanent - as in neverending - ringing or buzzing sound in your face. You will have to learn to live with it, once tinnitus or hearing loss does occur.
Hearing aids are the only remedy you will have at your disposal because science, at this stage, is unable to solve this problem: science has yet to find a way to replace these sensitive locks in your inner ear known as cilia. After the cilia have been damaged, there's no reversal. The difficulty with hearing aids, however, is the fact that in amplifying the sounds you want to hear, they also amplify external noise you don't want to hear.
Unfortuitously, using headphones is also adding to this problem since listeners often boost the amount in their headphones which in turn causes even more harm than that from loudspeakers.
While there are always a host of physical and emotional problems that can result due to hearing loss, among the problems I have noticed is a decrease in socialization by those unable to hear. All years do stupid things in their teenage years but this particular stupid thing has irrevocable consequences. For the sake of your reading, turn it down!
