Random babblings from an underproductive mind.

Avert your eyes, Mik.

I nearly bought an iPhone 4 last week.

They've launched them on the previously Apple-free Tele2, my network provider, and considerably more cheaply than the other networks, at my level of usage.

I use my mobile a lot, mostly to do what I'm doing now, surf, and I'm growing tired of the twelve key keyboard and low resolution Nokia 5200.

But even over two years, 5,000 kronor (about €475, U.S.$600) is 5,000. For something that one carries in one's pocket. That can get wet, dropped, stolen or forgotten. And who knows where one will be in two years time? What one will be earning?

(And yes, Android has a lot going for it, but I'm at home in the Apple environment).

So, no.

Exciting stuff, eh?

But besides that, does one need to be online at all times? This takes up too much mindspace as it is. Time that could be spent dreaming, or reading, or eating cake.

Thoughts? Musings?

Laziness pays. But in what currency?Margin for error.

The 'nearly' in the first sentence would not be enough to keep the dark fury from burning you on a cross, you know.

I have the LG Cookie. Not a smartphone, but similar. With a full touch sensitive keyboard which can be operated without the pen, if you practice.

You do not need to be online at all times. I am, but that is due to the fact that I am a writer, and I use a desktop pc for such pourposes. I always have Firefox activated in the background, so I have a way to escape the misery of writing.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Saturday, August 7, 2010 7:45:50 PM

It's just that the 'net can so easily become a substitute for every other activity.

lol Thanks, I owe you one. I'm expecting to be mentally spanked.

What's brought this on baby? Has someone we know bought an iPhone again? It's getting pretty packed under the patio so I hope not.

galadriel Sunday, August 8, 2010 10:41:29 AM

Phones...what's all the fuss about? I have a decent job now and can actually afford a really nice phone...
My old brick like pre 2003 Nokia broke the other week...so now I'm using my sister's old Samsung. Piece of junk! So I asked a friend if she has an old Nokia...I said I'd pay her $10 for it...she said it's not worth anything. So I'll be using a brick again soon wooo!

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Sunday, August 8, 2010 10:56:04 AM

It depends what you use them for. I was using mine to write a story on last night. It's not really built for that, I'm having a devil of a time retrieving what I wrote. I hate talking on 'phones.

Martin K™Aqualion Sunday, August 8, 2010 12:18:03 PM

My old collegue is sort of old-fashioned compared to the standards of the reporter-trade - we actually had mobile devices gallore back in the mid-nineties when I had my prime.
When he leaves his job, he leaves all mobile devices at the office. He has an ordinary telephone in his house and nothing else except for a small television set and a radio. And he is by the way a highly estimated newspaper reporter.

He told me, that one day he went to shop at the shopping center and 'a young man with a peculiar hairdo and a fancy logo on his shirt' approached him asking him, if it might be possible to see his phone. 'No,' my friend said. 'Am I supposed to walk around with my phone on me? What idiot would do that?'

The young mobile phone salesman had nothing he could say to this. I suppose his traniee course hadn't included that particular statement.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Sunday, August 8, 2010 1:04:06 PM

lol I know people who walk around with two. I've sat around while they've talked on the other line. Only slightly surreal.

ShallowMuse Sunday, August 8, 2010 2:45:45 PM

I just know that everybody and their DOG has Blackberries here now... GAH! Sheep. (although we're prolly 3 years behind on that trend but hey)

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Sunday, August 8, 2010 3:13:00 PM

No, Blackberries never really became popular except with business folk. Here, anyway.

Martin K™Aqualion Sunday, August 8, 2010 3:44:20 PM

BlueBerries - not in Denmark. Why would anyone run around with an entire phone booth in their pocket?

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Sunday, August 8, 2010 3:56:39 PM

My bro has one, but he just got it from work. Big contracts? I don't know.

galadriel Sunday, August 8, 2010 8:17:39 PM

We have Blackberry contracts at work too. Just $95 a month...well, currently I use about $40 of credit PER YEAR!

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Monday, August 9, 2010 3:49:48 AM

Wow. I pay usually 140 kronor a month or so. 39 of that is my 'net package, 49 for having an account. Most of the rest goes on texts.

Horlicks00 Monday, August 9, 2010 1:03:11 PM

Don't you have text bundles there?

And don't fall for all the media hype, the iPhone 4 is not that great with it's antenna problems from what i have heard.

Wow i can see what your problem is with the 5200. My last Nokia was the 3310 and then i went over to Sony Ericsson, i had the T300, K700 and K800 which was the best phone i had by far. I now have a C905 which is a good phone but i am planning to get the Nokia E72 when my contract upgrades later this year.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Monday, August 9, 2010 2:41:45 PM

The antenna problems are hype, I think. The media tend to have a narrow focus these days. Eh, the 5200 works fine as a mobile, even if the battery sucks. The N72 looks nice, though. Oh dear, we're guys. Girls get clothes and guys get stuff.

Horlicks00 Monday, August 9, 2010 2:44:45 PM

lol, true

Dark FurieFurie Monday, August 9, 2010 4:38:04 PM

The antenna problems aren't hype, believe me. Apple tried putting up videos of other phones with the same problems so they wouldn't have to refund and are currently being sued for misrepresentation as a result of tampering with the phones in order to replicate the problem on them. The screen problems have been over emphasised though.

Martin K™Aqualion Monday, August 9, 2010 7:11:08 PM

My heart belongs to Sony Ericsson - and Sony products as a whole, but let's not go there. When I got the new LG, I sort of gave my old SE to my son, because his old Nokia had died. I am seriously coinsidering to take it back, letting him have the new one instead. The SE had features, that I miss on this new touchscreen, for example the torch light - I spend much time in darkness (I know how that sounds, but it's true nevertheless): But what I miss most is the camera which was far far far better than the totally useless one on the LG Cookie.

As a writer, I sometimes need to research, and I sort of made it a habit to just snapshoot document pages, instead of getting the whole damn book from the library or bookshop or going through the complete waste of time of for example achieving permission to lend a four year old newspaper just to read one article. There's no possible way I can do this with the new phone. And getting a pocket camera just so that I can do this seems a complete waste.

So, I guess my touch screen phone adventure is coming to and end.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Monday, August 9, 2010 7:18:52 PM

Unless you buy an iPhone.

Kidding!

My last Ericsson was slow, and had a terrible battery.

Martin K™Aqualion Monday, August 9, 2010 9:13:19 PM

I've heard the roaming function on the iPhone can be quite expensive. Apperantly, if you take your iPhone to a Danish beach that incidently isn't covered by any ordinary mobile grid, it will roam to the Vodafone satelite grid, the one ships at sea use, which is really expensive. I've heard about several beachdwellers who got a really bad surprise when coming home from their summer residence.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Tuesday, August 10, 2010 3:41:14 AM

Wow. Some networks give the option of not allowing foreign connections. That problem wouldn't be specific to the iPhone, thought. It's amazing to me that only 3 (to my knowledge) have thought of charging their customers the same across their entire international network.

Mad Scientist (عادل)qlue Tuesday, August 10, 2010 3:04:16 PM

With South African networks, You to specifically activate roaming for the place you intend to visit. left

Serious question here: Would getting a desktop USB-keyboard and plugging it into your phone work? Or maybe there's some sort of adaptor, or something ... ?

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Friday, August 13, 2010 1:31:34 PM

There was actually a special keyboard that you could get for my last Nokia, a 6630, but this one isn't advanced. I doubt very much that that would work. Nice idea, though. I could, of course, start carrying around my 4K.G. MacBook. left

Mad Scientist (عادل)qlue Friday, August 13, 2010 4:35:24 PM

Would that be the one that doesn't have USB ports? whistle.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Friday, August 13, 2010 5:52:00 PM

No. You're probably thinking of an iPad.

Cleanclean Friday, August 13, 2010 9:50:37 PM

lol

MConor Friday, August 27, 2010 8:32:03 PM

The Iphone doesn't have usb ports either pssst

I stay the fuck away from all big companies that don't specialise in making phones lol I'd rather buy something I trust, rather than go with a big brand name p

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Saturday, August 28, 2010 6:09:31 AM

Mm, but every-one around me has them, and they are neat. One guy at work has an Android, it's virtually indistingushable. People seem to use them mostly to play very simple games.

Going to stick with my Nokia.

MConor Saturday, August 28, 2010 3:16:47 PM

I would too. I'm even iffy on Ipods. Although, I was checking out a Mac Book today. Looked pretty nifty. If only Alienware didn't exist lol

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Saturday, August 28, 2010 3:33:48 PM

I have a MacBook, it rocks. Alienware?

MConor Saturday, August 28, 2010 3:38:38 PM

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Saturday, August 28, 2010 3:45:32 PM

Nice.

MConor Saturday, August 28, 2010 4:08:58 PM

Indeed. Pricey, but a man can dream.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Saturday, August 28, 2010 8:07:49 PM

Mm. I still like having an O.S. that doesn't demand payment in stomach acid.

MConor Saturday, August 28, 2010 8:54:08 PM

True. Windows 7 is bullcrap. I love XP though.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Saturday, August 28, 2010 11:32:25 PM

OsX is better, but Apple are expensive.

MConor Sunday, August 29, 2010 12:29:51 AM

I've never used a Mac. I like the simple layout of Windows XP though.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Sunday, August 29, 2010 4:13:19 AM

XP is okay. Macs run better, though, especially longer term.

Martin K™Aqualion Sunday, August 29, 2010 7:35:10 AM

XP rocks.

MConor Sunday, August 29, 2010 11:25:42 AM

I bet, but OsX seems too show offy for me. I like simple things. I don't need a dock, I need a desktop. I don't want a full screen, I want a task bar. And there's less that'll work on Mac too

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Sunday, August 29, 2010 2:40:34 PM

MacOs X grooves. smile

Mm, but it works better. I migrated from XP, and I could never go back.

MConor Sunday, August 29, 2010 2:51:23 PM

It's a trade off really. Better security, less programs to use.

Martin K™Aqualion Sunday, August 29, 2010 5:24:46 PM

During the 90s when I worked with professional journalism at a monthly magazine we had Apple equipment only, including our home stations. Going from Mac to PC is quite an ordeal, but I still prefer PC. However, where PCs have changed and changed back with umpteen versions of Windows OS, Mac's still the same. Everytime I ocassionally turn on a Mac terminal I am greeted with the same, good old Mac-sound, and menus and keyboard operations are still the same. It's sort of nostalgic to me.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Monday, August 30, 2010 8:38:28 PM

And less learning. smile
