In the middle of a little vacation on the Oregon Coast

Deschutes River
Here's a short video I shot while at the Dechutes River a couple of weeks ago. I left it without music so you can hear the wind and water in the river. It's hard to really capture the beauty and desolation of the place.....maybe with practice I'll get better at it. I'm going to try to shoot a little video on every weekend camping trip or hiking expedition from here on out. I still like regular photography better though.

Tualatin Hills Nature Park, video
Decided to try my hand at going multimedia today......I made a little slide show presentation with some of the photos from one of my albums. Then I found out how long it ran, then used audacity to record a simple guitar track the same length. It's pretty crude, but I'm happy that I got through the whole process with no real difficulties. Now I'll have to see if I can do something that's not just a bunch of random photos over noise....

Portland, travel, Atlanta, max
...
Tonight I'm starting a journey to Atlanta for 9 days. It's sad that I'm going for my father's funeral, but I'll be able to see my brothers and some other family members, so that will help ring meaning and closure to my Dad's wonderful life.
The Portland airport is about 30 miles from my house, so rather than risk my wife getting lost in the middle of the night (my flight is at 6 am), I decided to ride the local mass transit train to the airport and wait there. Since I have about 5 hours to kill here I decided to start this boring blog. I brought along my eeepc 701. It's the original netbook made by ASUS. It has a celeron 900mhz, a 7 inch display, a 4 gb ssd and 2 gb of ram that I added. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix for an OS.

I also brought a couple of digital cameras with me so I can enhance the boringness of this adventure with some imagery. I loaded the GIMP on my netbook, so now I can process my images. I think the GIMP is the best open source graphics program. With my eeepc I can stick my SD card from the camera in the slot and save my work on the card until I get a chance to download to a disk or thummbdrive.

So.....now I'm sitting on the floor in an out of the way corner next to an electrical outlet in the airport. There is a children's play area pretty close. When I first got here it was a little busy, but now it's after one in the morning, so there's no sound here except for the ac and the periodic 'watch your baggage' anouncements.

I got here way too early to check my luggage, so I get to lug it around all night. Fortunately I won't be dooing a lot of walking around. I'm pretty slow oon this little computer - that'll eat a lot of the night. It's a good thing I work night shift....four or five hours is like a blink after 12 hr shifts. Here's a real blurry picture of mmy baggage. I don't dare to use a flash in here.....I miigh wake up Barney Fife.

Here's a blurry picture of my computer on the window sill behind me.

Well, I think that's enough for this part of the trip. I have layovers in Denver and San Antonio tomorrow. I can't wait to see what kind of boring airport stuff I can find there.

mini hotdog, Opera story, writing
That Opera apprentice position has been in the back of my mind for weeks now. The only problem is - I keep drawing a blank. Fortunately, I have an advantage over the average writer. Pchan, my mini hotdog, has some sort of psychic power over my brain. I work all night and sleep all day, but when he needs to go outside, he just looks at me and I wake up. Some wierd interspecies esp trick of his.
Yesterday he could tell I needed something to do, so he used his 'lick him till something happens' technique.
I guess that means he needs to go hunting. It's a good thing everything in the world is faster than him. He'd probably get beat up otherwise. Looks like a good day for waterfowl hunting at Dawson Creek. It doesn't take long to find some victims.
After finding the potential prey, Pchan nonchalantly waters a nearby tree, while not looking at the ducks. They seem to feel safe for the time being.
Finally the big moment has arrived. It's time for the attack. Those ducks are lucky Pchan doesn't feel like swimming.
Today is a duck and goose hunting bonanza.....the stupid birds on the other side of the lake didn't see the carnage across the water. Pchan gets to do another big charge.
So it was a highly sucessful day of hunting. Pchan got in his attacks and the birds were all trying to keep from laughing at the nine pound mini hotdog who thought he was a real threat.
Now, I get to put this little story up on My Opera. I'm excited about using Opera 10's Unite feature in the future. I can write tutorials for specific technical questions people ask and make them available as file downloads from my computer or in a website on my computer.
