History Navigation Mode for Local Browsing

Problem Using Opera to Browse Local Files: Images Do Not Refresh in Reverse In reference to Opera 11.10 - Images and the Back and Forward Function

Originally posted by CaptainFish:

I often use Opera as a replacement for the windows image preview program. Opera can easily open a folder, and the Fast Forward (space bar button) will quickly go to the next file in alphabetical order in the folder. This coupled back and forward allowed me to easily progress through a folder of images much faster than media designed programs, without having to open a new program as well. This is great for viewing comics or screenshots.

However, after I installed 11.10 today, the back function no longer works properly with images. If I attempt to return to an image file using back, the page appears blank until I refresh. The same thing occurs when examining images online as well. Open any image, press back then forward and the page just appears blank. The same thing occurs if you go from the image to another page and press back. Before the image would appear instantly from the cache, but now it either hangs at "Document 0%" as if trying to load a nonexistent page, or it just goes blank.

I tried emptying my cache, but the issue persisted.

It might be considered less crucial if it just occured viewing local files, but having all image files not load correctly upon navigation seems like a big issue

Solution

With reference to using Opera for browsing local files, changing HistoryNavigationMode to '3' would appear to fix this when replicated on my machine. up

Thanks

To access the setting, copy the following line and paste it into the address bar of a different Opera tab or window and hit Return/Enter:

opera:config#UserPrefs|HistoryNavigationMode

This will open the Preferences Editor to this particular setting, which you will probably find set at the default 1 (Automatic). See here for an overview of the 3 settings: (1) Automatic, (2) Compatible, and (3) Fast.

Fast Forward Fix (Opera 11.10)

, , , ...

Problem

Originally posted by asterixvader:

Fast Forward needs a small update

Well, I thought Fast Forward was messed up with 11.10, but after testing with old Opera versions it's Google who messed it up, so changing title from "FastF messed up!" to "FastF needs and update".

Apparently Google changed the HTML or whatever of its page and now Fast Forward links to the "More Google Products" page instead of jumping to the next results page. A little annoying when you're fully used to "left click + right click" to jump to next page.

On a side note, I liked that they mentioned CSS3 as part of the features updated in this new version, but Opera still needs to be even more standard and fully-compatible with all CSS3 features it has so far.

Solution

Originally posted by yareally12:

1) put a copy of fastforward.ini in your opera profile location (on windows 7 it's C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera)
2) add " Next "=101 (quotes are part of that) under ;English
3) save and reload opera

source: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/findpost.pl?id=9194222

" Next "=101
Appears on line: 43, in my copy.

Thanks
I'd been meaning to find a fix for that fast forward action. Thanks to both asterixvader for highlighting this problem, and yareally12 for solving it. up

Opera Force Search Engine Choice?

, , , ...

Re. my post: Cannot Delete bing Search!

Cannot Delete bing Search!
Since upgrading to version 11.10/win, I cannot get rid of the bing search in the drop down list.

I've used the appropriate Manage Search Engines option and restarted Opera, and even replaced all default Search.ini files with my own and made them Read Only. But it keeps reappearing. Have never experienced this scenario with previous versions.

Also, significantly, the bing search does not appear in the Search.ini file.

Opera have always liked to push their search options on their users, but now it seems they have hard-coded this into the program rather than an editable Search.ini file as in previous versions. This is the sort of forced 'choice' one would expect of a company like Apple. - It would appear a change in the file format of Search.ini has created this anomaly. READ FURTHER DOWN.

Update: I'm not alone
Cannot manage my search engines

Update: Replication
• Have been able to replicate this issue with Opera@USB v11.10 as well.

Update: Official Confirmation of sorts

Searches are protected in 11.10 because several applications have started hijacking the searches when you install them. If you edit searches from within Opera, you should be safe.

SOLVED?
By deleting, or commenting out, the Options section of one's Search.ini file, everything appears to be editable, as before.

Hacking The Opera Menu Tab

, , , ...

Opera Menu Tab Hack - Skinny or Custom
The Menu tab, introduced in version 10 I think, is another easy little hack to tweak your Opera Browser. It can be stripped back to display the Opera O logo only, thus removing the word, 'Menu', or can display your own text.

How To
Go to OPERA\locale and open the .lng file that represents your language, in a plain text editor. Change the line 606160820="Menu" to 606160820="" and re save the file. The change will appear the next time you start Opera.

In my case using Opera v11.01 build 1190 with the Opera Fan Club Skin v.11001 on Win7/x64, the full path is, C:/OPERA/locale/en-GB/en-GB.lng (Version: Created on 2011-01-26 10:04). And I use the excellent Notepad2. The change I make is on line 155. Once 606160820="Menu" is changed to 606160820="", I restart Opera to enjoy the new skinny Menu tab.

Of course, there's nothing to prevent you putting your own text in there to really customise things if space isn't a concern. See example images below.

Caveat
Important Reminder. The .lng file is a core Opera configuration file and shall be written over to reflect any changes made with updates, so you will have to re-apply this tweak when you update Opera.

Updated: Alternative Method
Thank you Saskatchewan for letting me know the text can be removed via Menu > Appearance > Toolbars, click the Menu button and then select Style: Images only. I'd actually suggest this as the preferred method, if you don't want your own custom text, because this will add the change to your operaprefs.ini file, therefore should remain intact when you next upgrade.

Wishful Thinking
What Opera users really need is an option to easily back up and restore all settings, including tweaks. The formatting of files has changed a lot in recent times, so it's no longer a straight forward exercise of copying your old saved files to a new Opera build. There are some good options out there, but none as comprehensive as required. Third party programs are always going to be reactive too. What's required is a built-in system from Opera themselves.

Opera 11 Wish List and Annoyances (thinking aloud)

, , , ...

The OPERA Browser version 11 is great, but it's not without it's frustrations. In no particular order then...

• Make Opera have Focus on Address Bar when opening new tab so one can paste in a URL. Possible in previous version.
star UPDATE: Clearly a problem create by me/extension/UserScript. Works as should in secondary default build.

• Extension Manager screen does not scroll when using arrow keys or Page Up/Down.

• Why does clicking a tab switch to a previous one? This is annoying when one is wanting to regain focus when working alongside other applications. Or is this an option I've missed?
star UPDATE: Clearly a problem create by me/extension/UserScript. Works as should in secondary default build.

• Insert Note is greyed-out despite notes working in panel.
star UPDATE: Clearly a problem create by me/extension/UserScript. Works as should in secondary default build.

Extensions Wish List:
• We need someone to create a toolbar extension manager that will allow one to create a drop-down list on the toolbar to prevent things getting overcrowded and running out of space altogether. The ability to sort the order would be wise as would the option to keep certain buttons on the toolbar in terms of easy visibility.
star UPDATE: The following link from shoust somewhat answers the above, in that it claims to give one the ability to at least arrange your extension buttons via drag 'n' drop. How to make the extension buttons drag able.

• I want a working UserScript or Extension that will allow me to directly save an image from within a <background> tag. I remember from using firefox some time ago, there was some sort of add-on that achieved this, but I've found nothing Opera yet, other than Inspect Element, but it's overkill and too slow for what should be a low resource action.

• Desperately in need of a comprehensive web developer extension.
star UPDATE: Presently working on creating one myself. sherlock

• Anyone know of a good tutorial that explains the process of converting a functional UserScript into an Opera Extension?
star UPDATE: Many thanks to metude for this link on Converting UserJS to Opera Extensions.

More frustrations but hopefully resolutions shortly...

Other than that, I'm in love again with Opera heart

British Government Sentence Bita Ghaedi To Death This Wednesday (5th May)

URGENT HELP REQUIRED

Save Bita Ghaedi from Deportation

Flight BD931 to Imam Khomeini Airport, Tehran. Leaving London at 19:00, 5th May 2010

Bita Ghaedi is a refugee living in Whetstone, England. She has been on hunger strike due to the fear over deported to Iran. The British Government has refused asylum. The extreme position 34-year-old Bita Ghaedi finds herself in, is because she is terrified of being tortured and killed if she is forced to return to Iran. Having previously endured both psychical and mental torture at the hands of her own family, Bita lives with the fear that she shall be hunted down and killed by her father, brother and uncle upon her return to Iran.

One must remember of course, that this is not an isolated case. Human Rights are anything like a right for many people across the globe. This is happening in perpetuity. But many of us, we possess not just the right, but also the luxury, to choose between action for change or plugging into the mainstream media and convincing ourselves, 'It's got nothing to do with me'.

update: 02:26 03 May 2010

Search for the name Bita Ghaedi on most of the mainstream news sites and a single story of remarkable consistency follows...

Your Search Results for Bita Ghaedi Did not match any documents.: No Results.

Rather worryingly both Amnesty and Liberty produced the same set of negative results. Though I think Liberty deal less with individual cases, choosing instead to fundamentally concentrate more on changes in the law. The lack of results at Amnesty I find less easy to fathom at this stage.
