irked What?
Some people, including myself, have experienced difficulty in obtaining dictionaries for the new in line spell check within Opera 10.x

yes So?
Here's the complete set, fresh today, 20th November 2009, from Opera's server. The abbreviations would appear, roughly, to follow the two letter country codes (ISO_3166-1), which you can find listed here on wikipedia, or consult Opera's dictionaries.xml file, which you will need anyway - see below.

confused Where?
  • Go to your Profile and create a new sub-folder called dictionaries - if one doesn't already exist.
  • Then add this dictionaries.xml file, plus your downloaded dictionary file/s - leave them zipped.

  • O/S Variations
  • Windows: $PROFILE\dictionaries\ (where $PROFILE is the 'Opera directory' in opera:about)
  • Linux/UNIX: $PROFILE/dictionaries/ (where $PROFILE is the 'Opera directory' in opera:about)
  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Opera 10/Dictionaries/

  • yes Finally
  • Restart Opera to see the change. Thanks U1K70R for reminding me
  • They should now appear as a listed option when you right click Dictionaries without having to go through the temperamental download procedure.

  • Thanks:
pincopallino for his initial help in solving this latest Opera annoyance.
U1K70R for pointing out one must restart Opera to be able to see the dictionaries in the list.

Anonym writes: Great article! Seems you forgot to add the en-us file to your list tho'. (The xml-file claims it should be named en.zip) Do you have it? :) A little annoying getting corrected while writing, say, color instead of colour :P

diego nunes writes: . . It is worth commenting that, in my case, as soon as I put the XML in the dictionaries folder, the list showed correctly and I could install them using the "tradicional" method. Before creating the folder and coping the XML inside it, the list was empty and I couldn't install anything. . . Thanks, Gary.

Worth saying the method described in this blog post is faster, but note that I had to restart Opera to be able to see the dictionaries in the list.

Glad I could help, and good point about having to restart Opera. I'll add this above. Cheers cheers
