We're back, with installation action at IIITM Gwalior...

, ,

Hi everyone!
It has been a long time since we performed any activities this semester. This was because we were slightly busy with our academics. But we're back again!
This time too, we plan to do something phenomenal. The campus crew members at Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior united once again for the cause of Opera.
We strolled through the campus, carrying Opera posters (which are a bit scarce these days!) and told people about the new Opera 11.52! Unfortunately, we had only Opera 10 and Opera 11.0 posters to show them, but it did the trick! We got a chance to make a few installations. This included two computers with windows 8 Developer Preview where Opera ran fantastic and then the old windows 7 ones which are just cool enough!
At the end of the day we had a lot to discuss about. we are planning something big before the semester ends. The exams just got over and we have a lot of time that we can devote for Opera...Looking forward...

"Towards making Opera the default browser!"

Two days back, I realized the role of the cabinet in building of a computer.
The same system, the set of mobo, HDD, RAM, works when kept open on a piece of thermocol; it even works when kept in another kind of cabinet; but doesn't work in the cabinet that I purchased!
So I decided to take a detour...

Yesterday, an old friend from Mumbai sent me a message on Facebook, stating that he was unable to upload photos from his digicam to his computer. He said he just wasn’t able to get the pics into his computer, because he wasn’t able to install drivers as the CD that he got with the camera was lost. The problem seemed to be quite simple, like searching for the software…but it turned out something grave...

Just hit the Panic Button...

Good day everyone!
Today I’m going to take you through something that we all have faced in our lives, and we all wish to get over it. We all wish that we shouldn’t have let it overcome us, but we realize it only too late…
It’s called PANIC!
All of us have panicked at some or the other point in our life maybe because of an unexpected situation or due to an uncontrollable one or maybe just out of certain fear of something.
With Opera extensions you can be sure that you don’t need to panic even in a panicky situation. Just hit the PANIC BUTTON! And the situation subsidizes immediately…

Let me show you how to go through this.
Just go to the Opera add-ons website:
https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/

And select the Panic button, like this:

Now click on install…

And before you can flash your eyelids, the extension will be installed and ready to use!

Now let me explain you how it can prevent you from a panicky situation.
Suppose you have a number of tabs Open and you’re searching for something. You go on opening tab after tab in the pursuit of searching that something which is really very important. At last you find what you’ve been searching for so long, but you see what mess you have created out of your browser – some 10 – 12 tabs open in front of you. You begin to panic…you’re so busy that you can’t manage to close each tab one by one. Now what?!

Panic Button is here to your service! Don’t worry; it’ll get things cleared within a nanosecond flat!

Just hit the little red button with an exclamation mark in the upper right corner of the browsing session window –

Within no time all tabs, except the one that you have been viewing currently, will disappear!

At this stage, the panic button turns GREEN, signifying that it’s working. This also means that there’s a green signal, and you don’t need to panic anymore.

The panic button also mentions how many tabs it has hidden, like in the above case, it’s showing the number 5, and meaning that 5 tabs have been hidden (actually closed).

You may ask how to restore the closed tabs, in case the conditions are now OK??
Just hit the Green button, and voila! All the closed tabs start reloading again!

The panic button becomes red again, though that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re supposed to panic! The closed tabs reload in a few moments.
The panic button is helpful in a wide range of situations. Sometimes, it can help you manage your computer’s resources by closing tabs that don’t need to be kept open at the instant.
At the same time, suppose you’re in your office, browsing some of your favorite sites and your boss just comes over. The situation is quite panicky, isn’t it?? But no worries, just hit the panic button and before you get into some trouble, you’ll have you boss appreciating you for your hard work!!!

So you can see how helpful the panic button is in dealing with tough occasions!
I hope you’ll surely thank the maker(greiner12) of this extension for developing such a helpful tool for you day-to-day needs…

Facebook? Anyone....?

Hi there!
As everyone knows Facebook is, today, the most popular social networking site in the world. And people spend hours and hours together to update their pages, write status messages, post photos on their friends’ wall, etc. etc. etc…
You might just be wondering at how much time is spent by you during the whole day just updating your Facebook profile, or viewing your girlfriend’s activities, or just looking around to get something interesting…
Just imagine if you could get all the updates of Facebook without even having to open the site. Won’t it save a whole lot of your precious time, while being extremely light and convenient??
Here we are guys!
A great extension designed by some great people out there, Facebook extension not only gives you a sneak-peek into the feeds on your wall, but it also serves as a great platform for you to share your own posts in the Facebook mobile style!
Let’s have a look at this wonderful application. Oh! I’m sorry, Opera 11 extension…

For getting this extension, just go to the extensions website:
https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/
And check for the extension that goes by the name of “Facebook”

Just hit the install button and the extension gets installed within no time at all…

Once you get this message, you can see an icon denoting Facebook on the upper right corner of the browsing session window, l;ike this…

Now you just need to click a button and there you go!

The window that pops up is similar to what is observed in Facebook mobile, but far more powerful and convenient..

There’s this button on the upper-left corner to show you recent updates:

When you press it, there drops down a list of your recent notifications…

The upper right corner has a convenient search Option…So you can search for what you want, immediately on the go.

The best feature is that it’s very lightweight while being extremely personalized. You don’t need to open a tab, and it connects to Facebook within no time. Recent updates and notifications are provided, you can search for your friends, send and receive messages, update your status; view your profile, all from one simple centralized extension.
With all this, and obviously much more to come in future, Facebook extension has the potential to become one of the most powerful and popular extensions for Opera 11

Let's turn the lights OFF...!

Hi people!
My name is Gaurav, and I just love the extension which goes by the cheesy name “turn off the Lights” which is, I would say, a Wonderful piece of Technical art! Turn off the lights is simply a great extension designed to dim or “turn off” the background “lights” so that the video is made to play prominently in the foreground. The result is fantastic! It gives a rich movie-like experience when watching videos online(especially on FB)). Although you can always maximize most of the videos to fullscreen, it gives a whole new experience in enjoying videos online in the Opera browser.
Getting the extension is simple, Just go to the Add-ons site: https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/
And check for the extension that goes by the name “Turn off the lights”

Now just hit the install Button, like this:

In less than a second the extension gets installed.

it’s really amazing to see the speed with which the installation takes place, as if accelerated by Opera itself!

We’re ready!!! Turn off the lights extension installed!

Let’s have a test run…
I tried using the extension on facebook, for watching a video of my friend.
Here are the results:

Lights on

There you can see a button that can turn off the lights at your wish...

Now let me turn the lights Off, here we go…

Bravo! There you go, with lights turned off you don’t need to worry if someone’s getting disturbed due to your bright monitor light!

The extension works amazingly well on most of the sites, and that means that there are bugs as well. Though a little tweaking can make it to work just as expected. Let me show you where the extension goofs up:

Here – The lights are ON

And now let me show you what happens when the lights turn OFF

This:

The extension couldn’t identify a video and thus dimmed the entire page!
While this is rare, it does happen. But even then the extension can be enjoyed on a variety of popular sites like youtube, Metacafe, etc.

So, you can see how great it can be…
It’s actually woth a try, I hope you will surely do…!

The Great Mumbai Tour...

Hi Campus Crew!!!
We had been to Mumbai for a presentation recently. It was supposed to be held on 16th December 2010.
We reached Mumbai on the morning of 14th December…and had no work than to just roam about. So we thought why not promote Opera and do something meaningful in this free time.
As a habit now, my friend always carries some Opera swags along with him such as key rings, posters, mobile pouches etc. So, we were in great position to carry out some great promotion of Opera browser. We started off on day one itself, taking a tour of the city nearby. As soon as we saw a café we would immediately approach the owner and take forward our quest of creating another clan of Opera-enlightened people!

It was quite fun to install Opera browser, one by one in whichever café we stumbled upon in our way. We could do a few cafés on the same day.

Next day again, we set out having the same secret intentions behind just roaming around the city!

Then came the day of the presentation. It was quite good and successful. We enjoyed it a lot. In the evening, though we were quite tired, we tried propagating the message of Opera to cafés on our way. It was really a very nice day, very enjoyable…

But the next day and the following days were not as good…that’s because Mumbai people fear a lot of being photographed – due to the ongoing terrorist attacks!!! Besides, some people would just not allow us to even touch their computers for any kind of software installation. There were many cafés where we were not allowed to install anything at all. There were few cafes where we could convince the owners to atleast let us install Opera even if they couldn’t let us shoot photos or give a proof in writing. Our main motive has always been promoting Opera browser, in whichever way we can, so never mind if we haven’t got the photographs!

I’m sharing the photos of cafés where we could shoot pics. These guys were more than happy to get Opera swags! This includes a marketing office of my friend who let me install Opera on his office PCs only after I gave him a demo of Opera, and how good it really was!

Let me also share with you another interesting incident of the day after the presentation:
This day we had planned to do the job of promoting Opera very seriously and cover most of the cafés near Malad. It so happened that during the day, we had got Opera installed at 6 cafés of which we could shoot pictures of 5 cafés. While returning back I noticed a café that had been missed. So I promptly went there, alone, very happily to have got another café, and talked with the owner. Unfortunately the owner’s 16-year-old-something son was at the café. So I took permission from him. While shooting pics, the owner came in and suddenly started shouting over how we could shoot pictures! He was so red-headed that he immediately snatched my camera from my hand and held it like he was going to smash it into pieces…I was terrified – I loved my camera, and it hurt me to see it being held by someone else. I reacted immediately, but he held the camera too tightly. Meanwhile he called the nearby shop owners and told them that I was shooting pics of his café without his permission! And even his son couldn’t say anything, afraid of his anger, maybe…
He went inside the café and said he’ll call the police and then only shall I be given a chance to explain myself. I tried to convince him, but his only words were, “Taj pe bomb phodne se pehle bhi photu ich liya tha (Mumbai 26/11 attacks on Taj hotel also involved shooting of site photos prior to it…)”. What a pity! He was branding me as a terrorist! When I showed him my identity card of IIITM, he said, “aisa to apun bhi banwa sakta hai (even I can get that made)” too arrogant…
After lot of convincing, he said that I could take the camera but leave the memory card. I couldn’t have given the precious memory card to him because it had pictures of many café installations as well as few of my personal photos. Then some people form the café itself suggested that he might just as well format the card and then give it to me. Devastating…

Finally, I got my camera with it’s memory card formatted, and everything captured during that day was lost!
The next day, I couldn’t gather courage to even ask someone if I could shoot pictures. It was a really disappointing incident…After this I went to a friend's place. He owns a computer training centre. When I shared with him the incident, even he felt very sad about it. I began telling him about our quest to make Opera the default browser. He was glad and said he would like to try the Opera browser, so I immediately installed it in the Computers at his Zenith Computer training centre. These are the pics:

Anyway, such things keep happening…so we must not lose spirit, let’s keep working – in the name of OPERA...
