Walking over sky, following a bird...

British Humour

Something I grew up with.
When I was a kid we had only two TV channels and I think I may say they were much more interesting than what we have today. For some reason, people in charge for making our TV program liked British humourists and their shows more than others, so when I wanted a portion of a good laugh - who wouldn`t? - I just needed to wait sunday afternoon and watch one man talk show that I liked the most.
Ladies and gentlemen, Dave Allen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cT-BQLX6nU

I am not sure why I liked him so much, when his show appeared for a first time on TV I was probably about 10. But the way he told jokes and stories was acceptable to me. And funny, even though I didn`t understand all of the slight levels of his humour like I do now :D
Later, when I was in high school Only Fools and Horses started to show on our TV and I think this was most hilarious and interesting show on Serbian TV ever - or at least during 80s and 90s. Whole generations grew up on this show and it probably formed a good part of our own sense of humour. Like with Dave Allen show, Only Fools and Horses were based on funny situations and smart but hilarious conversations. It was so popular that almost all of our televisions repeated it over and over during 90s. I think I saw somewhere they are repeating it again :faint:

Last one that appeared here.... I must correct myself here... the last one I watched on TV with interest, was, who else but Mr. Bean. His show was much different than the previous ones, based mostly on everyday situations played by, as Rowan Atkinson described it the best, "a child in a grown man's body". This one here was almost a cause of my own death about 15 years ago. I was alone at home, it was after midnight and I was already preparing myself for bed when I saw it on one TV program. They broadcasted just short clips like this one. The end was so unpredictable...

I started to laugh, holding my stomack while tears ran down my face. I tried to breath in but then I remembered what he did and hard spasm of laugh caught me again. After few more attempts I realised I would choke if I don`t catch some air VERY soon :insane:
I obviously did, otherwise you wouldn`t be reading my post today :D

You were nearly killed by Mr Bean?? :insane: rip I don't think I'd want that as an epitaph!

Me, I like Yes Minister :D

PainterWoman 7. November 2009, 22:35

   These were good and so funny Darko! I've never seen the first two and on Mr. Bean only a couple of times on an Opera post.

Edward Piercy 7. November 2009, 22:48

Great stuff. Do you remember the Mr. Bean episode where he got his head stuck in that turkey? ROTFWL.

Edward Piercy 7. November 2009, 22:53

And oh...

L2D2 7. November 2009, 23:37

Dave Allen was funny. Never saw him before. Only Fools and Horses is a great Brit com. I love nearly all of them. David Jason was also good on Open All Hours. And Mr. Bean was OK, but I like Rowan Atkinson better in both Black Adder and Thin Blue Line. I am a a huge, huge fan of British comedy and used to watch every one faithfully. Very few are available now on my satellite TV. I had cable when I watched them on KERA PBS every Sat. and Sun. night

Other favorites---The Red Green Show (Canadian), Keeping Up Appearances, As Time Goes By, Are You Being Served, Waiting for God, One Foot in the Grave, To the Manor Born, Coupling, Red Dwarf and many others. Monty Python of course.

Edward Piercy 7. November 2009, 23:57

@ Ossian.

Well if you run into that strawberry blonde just to Benny's right please tell her that I love her and want to have her baby. p:

Angeliki 8. November 2009, 01:08

:o: sorry, I couldn't resist!

L2D2 8. November 2009, 03:12

 Wasn't there something in the news in recent past about a pregnant man? I think they should have to be pregnant with every other child. That way, there would never be more than 2 per family.

Darko 8. November 2009, 07:26

Carol :D

Graham, I wanted to put Monty Python in post too, but I was never a huge fan of them, don`t now why. Even though I like John Cleese  Do you remember that episode from Canada? About Canadian beer:
- That beer of yours is like a driving in a canoe...
- How`s that?
- It`s close to water....

Adele, the moment he knocked the queen down was too much for me, like that finger was not enough    :faint: I remember "Yes, Minister", we had it in out TV but was never repeated...

Pam, it was a hard task for me to pick a part of episode from Only Fools and Horses because it is whole episode that makes sense but here and there it is possible to find hilarious details :jester:

Ed, I have seen that one again on You Tube while I was preparing this post
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMK99aeaLHg

Linda, you should check on Dave Allen on You tube  I was looking for an episode where he explains what is he doing while stuck in traffic jam, that one was excellent

Angeliki, as far as I remember, that man was a female at the beginning :left:

Farts Kittens and Poops Rainbows 8. November 2009, 08:44

I remember an old one called Love Thy Neighbour. They wouldn't show it nowadays (just like Kingswood Country on free-to-air TV in Australia), because people would complain to the station that it was promoting racism. But they were really clever, because they showed racists to be foolish, regardless of who they were racist against.

Black Books induced in me the choking fit Mr Bean induced in you. Just one particular scene where Manny was asking a customer if he could help them and the customer turned around and shouted at him, causing his hair to fly in the heated breeze. I don't know ... it was funny to me.

Like Linda said above, Blackadder, Red Dwarf and One Foot in the Grave (God, I'd love to send a dead rat to a junk mailer like Victor Meldrew, but I'm all out of dead rats ...  ).

Ahh ... so many. Kenny Everett ... The Young Ones ... Bottom ...

Darko 8. November 2009, 08:59

Daid, I am not familiar with few of those you mentioned, some of them were never broadcasted on our television. But you made me rememeber one that I almost forgot, a sitcom comedy from 90s, Men Behaving Badly. Have you seen it?

Farts Kittens and Poops Rainbows 8. November 2009, 09:15

:frown: No.

K C N Martínez 8. November 2009, 09:18

British humour is the best! :D

Darko 8. November 2009, 10:51

David that one is not favorable for us, men - it shows how big kids we still are :jester:

MizzM, I share your opinion

Allan 8. November 2009, 11:33

You had two channels, lucky you? We had only one!

I agree with your examples here. I also remember Dave Allen weel, and how I liked his making fun of religion. That was good :D

But my favorite was and is Monty Python!

The Dark Furie 8. November 2009, 12:53

Dave Allen is an awesome stand-up. He's so in control when he's on the stage, knows exactly what he's gonna say yet always makes the routines unique. If you like his stuff you might wanna look up Jasper Carrott as they have similar styles but stand apart enough to be... different. :left: I ran out of words. :o:.

I grew up on Only Fools & Horses. At the end of it (or at least what I count as the end as the Christmas specials were kind of lame) they become millionaires and enter the pub with everyone giving them a round of applause, and I'm right there clapping myself with tears in my eyes. It's funny how you can grow attached to characters in a comedy eh? I think my favourite episode is the one where they're both trapped in a lift. For a comedy show it just has excellent acting.

The problem with Men Behaving Badly isn't that it isn't funny cause it's bloody hilarious. The problem is that so many british guys thought that's the way they're meant to act in real life and they do still..

I think Blackadder and Red Dwarf are some of the best british comedies out there, and whenever I meet an American with a crush on House I always direct them to a clip of Hugh Laurie dressed as Prince George in Blackadder the Third. That's what they get for using him as an example of how great their American actors are then slagging British actors without realising he is British. Homer: Doh!

r♡se 8. November 2009, 13:02

British humour rocks :D.
I've only seen Mr Bean of the ones mentioned in your post, but I have fond memories of Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Yes Minister, Red Dwarf and lots of other shows!

Darko 8. November 2009, 14:44

Allan, I can`t remember when we got second channel, I guess I was too young; but probably it happened during 70s :left:
as for Monty Python, the one I enjoyed the most was Life of Brian :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1loyjm4SOa0

Mik, I think someone here mentioned Jasper Carrott, maybe it was Graham; will check on it later;
-Only Fools and Horses; the best one for me was in hospital when Dell was waiting for Raquel to give birth of ther son Damien (Damien Dereck Trotter, DDT  ); I thought that David Jason must have been the one to write a script for that one
I knew that Hugh Laurie is British but it was not the first time that some of British actors play in American movies. Remember Band of Brothers?

Rose, I liked Blackadder but the one from WWI :D I don`t think we ever had Fawlty Towers and Red Dwarf :left:

Kimberly 8. November 2009, 15:09

 liked them all, always thought Brits had a better sense of humor than most Americans. they seem to like to laugh, and most Americans when you tell a joke, look at you as if you were something from outer space.

Suntana 8. November 2009, 15:43

My idea of British Humor is watching Hot & Shapey Liz Hurley in the movie Bedeviled.

Kimberly 8. November 2009, 16:07

that would be Jaxs as well...lmao

Darko 8. November 2009, 18:02

Kim, once I told a joke to some American students I met in Berlin. I don`t remember which one it was, something popular in Serbia in 1990. And they were all :eyes: at me. Then I told it once again and they got it. Laughed a lot :D

Carlos, I think you are talking about Bedazzled :D
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0230030/

L2D2 8. November 2009, 18:50

Fawlty Towers, yes, another funny one. There were so many great British comedies on KERA. I followed Red Dwarf for years, and the original Dr. Who's.

So many Americans just do not get British humor and I feel sorry for them. My own daughter-in-law thinks I'm nuts for enjoying Brit. Coms. She is totally humorless anyway, and British comedy goes completely over her head.

My sister, Nell, who just passed away was also a great fan of British comedy. Maybe it's a racial memory kind of thing? p:

Suntana 8. November 2009, 19:01

Ohhh, she was in Bedazzled too. And in Belusted.

Darko 8. November 2009, 19:17

Linda, I`ve found this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8spJd-bMaA

Carlos

Whassit Tooh-Ya 8. November 2009, 19:32

Hmmm, I'm not sure about the first guy, I'd probably recognise him but the name doesn't register. As for Mr Bean and Only Fools, I'm sorry to say I loathe both with a passion :left:

L2D2 8. November 2009, 19:36

Thanks, Dare, I remember that episode. One of my favorites was the drunken Chef and another was the renovation by the Irishman.

My favorite all time episode of Monty Python is the dead parrot one. I roll every time I see that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj8RIEQH7zA

And The Holy Grail is my favorite Python movie. I was stoned out of my head first time I saw it and I literally rolled in the floor laughing. Now I watch it at least once a year. I requested the movie for a Christmas present from a former boyfriend, and so I now have it at home where I can watch any time I like. Also have a set of Flying Circus episodes.

Darko 8. November 2009, 21:05

Kimmie, you don`t have to be sorry, we are all different  What do you like to watch?

Linda, I remember the one with dead parrot. Do you remember "confuse a cat"?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2Je1CEPkUM&feature=fvst

Whassit Tooh-Ya 8. November 2009, 21:29

I like lots of shows. Old British stuff? Red Dwarf, Blackadder, some Fawlty Towers are ok. I like a couple of the Monty Python movies but I find the show very hit-and-miss. Also, Porridge.

Darko 8. November 2009, 21:31

Porridge? Never heard of it. I know it is a food, though :D

L2D2 8. November 2009, 21:55

Porridge is also good one. Ronnie Barker stars (same one in Open All Hours) Porridge is prison. It takes place in a prison where Barker is an inmate---quite a unique one, too. Only saw one season of Porridge, but I enjoyed it. Last of the Summer Wine also good. And Allo! Allo!

Ana 8. November 2009, 22:02

Oh, I adore these! Only Fools and Horses is one of my favorite series. I can watch them constantly and never feel boredom. What what to say about Mr. Bean except that it is hilarious! I also like Monty Phyton flying circus.

L2D2 8. November 2009, 22:06

Baldock, is that near Hitchin? There is a Hertfordshire Constabulary police station at Baldock, isn't there?

L2D2 8. November 2009, 23:37

Wonder how I knew that? :D

L2D2 9. November 2009, 00:04

Linda, I remember the one with dead parrot. Do you remember "confuse a cat"?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2Je1CEPkUM&feature=fvst

That was crazy, too. One of the big attractions for me to Monty Python is their animations and graphics. They are insanely funny if you watch them.

Darko 9. November 2009, 05:40

Linda, how could I forget Alo, alo! Homer: Doh! One of the best I have ever seen

Graham, your job has some advantages here and there :D

Ana, I knew you would like them, it was part of our growing up in Serbia :D

L2D2 9. November 2009, 05:54

I think I have seen them all at one time or another. KERA showed more British comedies that BBC did. They started at 9 or 10 p.m. on Sat. night and ended at 2 a.m. Same on Sunday night. I miss them

Allo, Allo was insane.

Darko 9. November 2009, 12:16

Good mowning...... :D

L2D2 9. November 2009, 22:15

I liked the mother-in-law! And the undertaker. And, of course, the German soldier who was gay. Can't remember his name.

Does anyone remember the flying nun episode?

L2D2 9. November 2009, 22:19

This is sort of a recap of all the funny characters.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xtvm6xZSGCo

L2D2 9. November 2009, 23:13

And the painting hidden in the big sausage! hahahah

L2D2 9. November 2009, 23:13

And those two poor American airmen---they must have had major muscle cramps. :eyes:

L2D2 9. November 2009, 23:50

Yes. Rene always had problems saying that. And the Major what's his face who was an American imitating a German imitating a Frenchman, or something like that. Sometimes had to think about it before I could figure out what he was saying.

Darko 10. November 2009, 05:31

Policeman was the most hilarious character to me

L2D2 10. November 2009, 05:53

I may spend part of the day tomorrow watching Allo, allo on You Tube. They have several seasons on there.
