TV

After reading an excellent post made by Mik Furie, I decided to develop an idea of the post that was in my mind for some time.
TV.
Tely.
Television.
Upon my humble opinion, invention of television is, among electricity, phone, PC and burek with yoghurt, one of the most important things that happened in 20th century. It literally changed the way of life. And itwas is the most mercilessly obused device ever.
Long time ago, when I was still a kid, we, in former Yugoslavia lived in informatic and communication Heaven. We had only 2 channels of official government-led television, only the rare owned video players, no signs of PCs or mobile devices. Even the phone line was a luxury for some. But we had a TV. And radio, too, BUT we had a TV!!! During parts of the day when I was not in school or learning, I spent free time in reading or watching TV program. During that time, it consisted of mostly boring political "Big-Brother-will-tell-you-what-to-think" shows (that no one watched), some sports, news and movies. My father was interested mostly in football (soccer, for my USA friends) and basketball, and it was broadcasted usually during afternoon so mornings were mine (when I was not at school). I spent my time watching "The World of Survival" (does anyone remember David Bellamy?) and some of the movies when they made them from a heart.
First time I felt bored from it, was during 90s. Great economic crisses, the World`s biggest monetary inflation plus wars in our former country made a TV program obused by a leading party for spreading their political views - something similar to "Big-Brother-will-tell-you-what-to-think" but much more aggressive. We didn`t have money to buy a proper food but there was a lady on the news telling us how great our life is and that everyone else are wrong in everything; we were the most beautiful, most intelligent, magnificent nation and all the others are thinking evil thoughts. Suddenly, all the beautiful shows about nature disappeared, instead we got more political and quasi-political shows - some of them included half dressed women from show business. They still talked about how beautiful our life is, especially that part when they explained how easy it is to drive brand new Mercedes they bought; and about "material for their new project" which, more or less sounded like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQxeWzJcUnI
Need any comment? We didn`t have to wait for too long before soap operas came and after that Big Brother, Farm, Changing a Wife, Moment of Truth, etc, etc. I am not sure if the last two came from abroad, they could be "projects" of some ingenious mind from here - Serbia or some other Balkan country. In first one there are two families, and father of families exchange wives - for a week or so - and then we can all see how a new wife/mom is adapted to a new family
At the end, they all return to their original families, share impressions, and someone pick a family who will get some money for displaying all of their stupidity in public. Moment of Truth is even worse (I think I saw something similar in one USA TV), for a certain amount of money participant need to answer questions that reveal all of the personal trash he/she hided for a whole life - using of alcohol and drugs and cheating on husband/wife are the top of that pile of shit - and the most wanted
Where "The World of Survival" has gone? Suddenly it was transformed into survival of watching so called pre-election political marketing, another pile of shit that no one wants to see but we all have to pay for.
All of this represents collective state of mind in Serbia and some of the consequences are described in Mik Furie`s post.
So I stopped watching TV. Anyway, there was, and still is, nothing interesting to see. At the beginning of 21st century we finaly got another miracle of developed world, a cable TV
So, one day a company dedicated to cover cable TV broadcast in my part of town, offered to make free of charge connection to all new users; so I applied. A friend told me there are some great programs to watch, like Animal Planet, History Channel, National Geographic and I got myself hooked. Representative from a company came to my home, offered me some application form to fill and on his way out, told me they will send someone to connect me. After 15 days I got a bill for a first month
Being without service I refused to pay and called them to sort things out. They apologised and told me someone will come soon to connect me. After a month, I called again and they told me they have a big "project" (that word again) on the other part of the town, but my neighbourhood is the next. After another month I called again and the excuse was: "Sorry, we don`t have cables, we need to wait for next shipment..." So, I tore contract to pieces and forgot about whole thing. It was in 2002. and I think they are still waiting for that shipment to come

Few days ago, I was buying a new fridge, and used that opportunity to take a look at some of the TVs in a shop. Flat screen, plasma, big with beautiful colours, they all look like from a Star Trek comparing to my 19 years old Kamacrown TV I have at home. Since my grandma broke a hip last year, my grandpa must stay at home to help her. She is mostly sleeping now so he spends a day watching TV, and I thought it would be nice to buy a newer one, not plasma or flat, they are too expensive for us, but anything that will ease his eyesight. So I asked him about the idea. I would pay for it anyway.
"Why?, he asked, "It would be a waste of money".
My thought, exactly

In my family, we didn't have Color TV until around the time I was in the 4th Grade. Heck, we didn't have a phone until I was a Senior in High School.
Yep, Darko, that sounds about how politics goes. The incumbent administration will tell you how great you and everyone has it and everything is on schedule for even more amazing greatness. Reality will of course indicate differently. The opposing party will of course also tell them they're full of BS.

Sometimes, I think I keep the TV on just for the noise. Since I live alone, somehow that noise makes me feel as if there are more people in the house. Now that's pathetic.

When I was a child there were only two TVs - balck and white tvs in our village. I had to pass thru the paddy field to watch tv in the evening.Until 1993 we could buy a TV. There was one or two chanels. I loved to watch children program which was called Tiny flowers - I could see many lovely children sing and dance. It was just 15 minutes per day. I always counted the time to watch it.
I had liked to watch the news so much that I didn't go to sleep until I watched the final news of day

L2D2 # Saturday, October 17, 2009 9:06:54 PM
Family didn't own a TV till the day of Ike Eisenhower's first inauguration. Came home from school and there it sat, 15" screen TV in all it's glory.
TV was great in the 50's. I Love Lucy, Bonanza, The Virginian, Have Gun Will Travel, Superman, All the westerns and comedy shows---Our Miss Brooks, My Little Margie---good, clean shows for entertainment purpose only, no agendas. Also all the great old quiz shows like Beat the Clock, This is YOur Life, I've Got a Secret. All so innocent compared to the trash on TV now.
I like SciFi Channel, HGTV, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, SOAP OPERAS, and BBCAmerica shows, some of them. Spend much more time on PC now than on TV. I listen to it more than watch. Have 150 channels plus Starz and Encore Movie channels. Most of those channels are trash.

Well, British TV isn't great. It was better years ago but cuts are always being made, the digital age has spread the budget ever more thinly, and the documentaries, sadly, are being hit by that. Which is very short-sighted, but hey.
I don't watch much TV. If I have it on, I'm usually drawing and it's just in the background, almost like the radio! I have a number of DVDs that I like though, including the great wildlife series of course

as an adult I realized TV is a tool, it can be used right and it can be used wrong.
There are channels that make you happy without the need to think much, and there are educational programs that schools follow, many home schooled kids watch, or
there are many lonesome people that need to see and hear the news or another person... yes, it sounds sad , but there is an older person somewhere "near you". How many of us knock that door to spend time with the lonesome...not many. TV to them is a companion and I see nothing wrong with it!
Sadly many lazy young people take "the tool" and use it to become more lazy.. as I said above it depends of how you see it...
a great post Darko,
thanks for sharing

San, at one point my friend was surprised I don`t have my own TV so he suggested I could use some of the web sites where they offer watching it on line. I went there, connected and first thing I saw was something similar to that link I put in a post. That was it
Carlos, my grandparents got a phone line in 1973. when they moved to this appartment (brand new back then). But my parents got it few years ago, despite the fact they applied several times. Times are changing slowly sometimes. But TV was easier to get, just go to shop
Pam, I am having radio turned on for a noise, I was used to it since my childhood. When I was younger I tried it with TV too, but found it too distractive, I mean, I just have to stop doing whatever I did and start to watch. Then I would just forgot about the work
And that story about "remote control" is just funny
Mit, only two in a whole village? Wow! There is one funny story my late grandma told me (the one from Croatia); her relatives who emigrated to USA before World War 2 sent her a photograph made during 60s, there were two old ladies with an ancient model of TV between them. And in letter they explained her what it is and how it is used. Well, during 60s there were maybe 1 TV in entire village but the funny thing is they sent a letter in 1980. when it was usual for every household to have at least one
Words, the one I wanted to buy to my grandpa is CRT model of some South Corean manufacturer that costs about 60 eur. But I must say, there is another reason for it. Our government declared that we will move to digital signal in 2012. and I am not sure most of the expensive TV would fit to that change - probably some of them would need adapter, too. But I can imagine the faces of the people in that shop
I watched a lot of good movies in our old b/w TV and had no problem in "imagining" colours
Dirk, commercials is something I will blog one day, as this part of broadcast deserves a post for itself. I was in a

Allan, usually when I want to know what is going on in my country and in world, I read on line websites of our newspapers. Two or three of them. Then I go to to some of the Croatian web sites (2 of them too) and read the news about my country I could find there, so I can see how our neighbours are looking at the same thing. As for the world, I read in several sources (BBC, AP, Interfax). This is, upon my opinion, the best way to get objective picture about the events. Sort of
Linda, I don`t remember when we got our first TV because it was probably there since my early age, so it was a part of my childhood. And I don`t know most of the shows you mentioned, but this is no wonder - first TV stuff from USA we got here were western movies
David, since most of my readers here mentioned that Dr. House, I might give it a chance - I saw a dvd set somewhere few days ago

Martin, I guess this is the price all national televisions have to pay these days. It became a big industry and if you don`t fit, you are out. I have seen some commercials about family humoristic shows they broadcast now - and I didn`t liked it at all
News here were never objective. This is why I read from several sources....

I do agree that tv has been taken over by reality shows - we have Wife Swap here as well - and it's disappointing, but since dvd came along it's a bit easier to watch so many things you like, even if it costs a lot.
As for the big tv, I think I agree with your grandfather. I believe it's an "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" situation
Darkogdare # Sunday, October 18, 2009 12:02:10 PM
Were they all turned on at the same time?
As for dvd, I can watch them on PC. If there is a movie my gradpa want to see, he just sit in front of it and I do the technicalities
It is rare, though, because he can`t sit in a chair for a long time - he would rather lay in bed or sit in sofa

You know that we don't actually watch television here, preferring to buy DVDs of shows we know are good, or that have been recommended to us. Too often people will just watch what's on despite having no interest in it and that's the real mind rotting effect of television. While it's well known that I adore B-movies, I'm very picky about what I watch otherwise. I need very good acting (I don't care if the characters are likable as long as they're well acted), tight writing with surprises and a good mixture of drama and comedy.

One time, the Cable Repair dude didn't even show up in the entire day! Yep, I wasted an entire day imprisoned in my place only to have them NOT show up. I waited a 2nd day and the guy just barely made it like at 15 minutes till 5:00PM. I would have gone ballistic if I had been stood up 2 days.

Carlos, I have a personal trick that will share with you; when people must deliver something or when some kind of hany man is invited to make something or repair, first I ask them when they will come - or when they have time to come; after that I tell them I will be there and wait for them; BUT.... I tell them if they don`t "manage" to come that specific day or time, they better don`t try to do that another day because I will change them with someone else; sometimes I choose to pay for something upon delivery and it is easier to them to come in time than to return stuff back; then they will have to explain to their superriors what happened; and handy man will lose a money; I did it several times and it worked
Rose, I guess no one uses transistor radio for a background noise these days
Martin, this reminds me of a stories older people talking about how they managed to get Radio Luxembourg way back in 50s and 60s. Back then it was the only way some of the "western" music could be heard. When I was a kid we could have some of MTV only through official TV programme, it was not a direct broadcast but recordings of some popular music spots. Everything has changed in last 20 years

Dare, some people in U.S. have TV's in nearly every room. Very common to have large TV in living room or den, one in kitchen, one in each bedroom (I am not one of these, although I do have one in living room and one in bedroom). NOw, more and more people have also started putting TV's in their bathrooms. Yep! Watch TV while you do your business.

Martin, that TV was really cheap, according to today's exchange rates it is about 135 eur. Flat screen TVs I have seen in that shop were from 250 eur to 3400 eur, depending on a size of a screen. Here is a link, it is in Serbian but you will manage.
Having several services as one package is always better even though you got something you don't really need. There was a funny story here during 90s, when we had big economic crises: if you want to buy a bread you will have to buy a kilogram of nails, too. It costs a bit more than 1 bread but it is sold in package
