When you have a new arrival in your house it is worrying, tiring and thrilling. They look so small and fragile that you think that if you take your eye off them for a second they will come to some harm - this is what it means to be a parent. Having a baby monitor alleviates some of this stress.
Having a connection to your baby while they are on their own is a great comfort. The invention of baby monitors actually happened as far back as the 1930's when Mr Fischer came out with the first monitor.Since then, of course, technology has taken over and there is now a huge range of monitors with various functions.
Most monitors on the market today fall into two categories, being either audio or video; so you have the choice of only wanting to hear your child or of wanting to be able to see your child; monitors are either wireless or need to be plugged into a socket - the latest additions are monitors that have movement sensors and monitors that come as an app for your i-phone or smart phone.
The two types of audio monitors you can buy are analogue and digital.Interference can occasionally be a problem with analogue monitors if there are other units working near working on the same frequency - if two nearby houses have the same model of monitor for example. The majority will have a switch to change the frequency if it is becoming a problem. In general though it is only an occasional problem and something that is not a huge issue. Digital monitors will not suffer from this particular issue.
How to choose which baby monitor to buy:
If you purchase a plug-in model you need to be aware that you can;t take the monitor with you if you go to outside or to another room in your house and so you might not be able to hear your monitor, whereas with a wireless one you would be able to - keeping in mind you need to be within pick up range of the monitor in the baby's room. Having a portable unit is great if you have to be moving around your house getting all you chores done.
What to consider if you are buying a portable monitor -the most important thing is the size, do you want to carry it around with you because you are moving around a lot or do you just need to pick it up now and then and move it to another room? Look at the size and think about you are going to use it..
What to consider if buying a video monitor - obviously can you see your baby in the dark conditions; if you buy a monitor with poor visibility in low lighting and your baby sleeps with the lights off, this isn't a great combination.
Howmany options do you need? The top range monitors will provide you with an exciting range of extra things - units can light up in the dark, play nursery songs and even have download capabilities, have alarms and so on. If you don't want to buy too much, think carefully about how much you need all these things.
If you are purchasinga monitor that's portable check that the batteries are rechargeable - they usually are - also make sure you can replace the batteries - sometimes certain types of batteries are difficuly to obtain.
When you decide to buy baby monitors the range is large but you can find the monitor that will fit your needs.
