What to think about when you buy baby monitors

, , , ...

When there's a new baby in your family it is a strange combination and joy and stress. They look so small and fragile that you come to the conclusion that if you don't keep an eye on them something bad will happen - such is the parental instinct. Having a baby monitor alleviates some of this stress.

Having a connection to your baby while they are on their own is a great comfort. The invention of baby monitors actually happened as far back as the 1930's when Mr Fischer came out with the first monitor.Since then, of course, technology has taken over and there is now a huge range of monitors with various functions.

Most monitors on the market today fall into two categories, being either audio or video; so you have the choice of only wanting to hear your child or of wanting to be able to see your child; monitors are either wireless or need to be plugged into a socket - the latest additions are monitors that have movement sensors and monitors that come as an app for your i-phone or smart phone.

The audio type monitors come in analogue or digital types.Interference can occasionally be a problem with analogue monitors if there are other units working near working on the same frequency - if two nearby houses have the same model of monitor for example. The majority will have a switch to change the frequency if it is becoming a problem. In general though it is only an occasional problem and something that is not a huge issue. Happily this is not a problem with digital monitors and for most manufacturers digital monitos will become their standard issue.

Things to consider when you buy baby monitors:

If you buy a plug-in monitor you should be aware that you are retricted in that you can only keep the monitor in one room, so if you needed to go to another room or even outside you may be outside of earshot of the monitor, this is not an issue of you purchase a portable monitor although you need to know the range your monitor can effectively pick up. It is easier to get things done around the house if you have bought a portable baby monitor.

Questions you should ask if you are purchasing a portable model: can I carry it easily? You need to know the range as well?.

The most important consideration is visibility - is the monitor going to let you see your baby in the lighting conditions you leave you baby to sleep in? The more expensive video monitors will include night vision functionality.

Howmany functions do you need? The top range monitors will offer you a raft of extras - units can light up in the dark, play nursery songs, have alarms and etc. If you are watching the budget line, consider carefully about what it is you need exactly.

If you are purchasinga unit that's portable check that the batteries are rechargeable - which they should be - and make sure you can easily replace that battery type, that they are easily available.

When you decide to buy baby monitors the range is huge but you can find the monitor that will fit your needs.
