More on New funding opportunities from GeoConnections (Canada)

New funding opportunities on the horizon... Over the next few weeks, GeoConnections will be issuing four new Announcements of Opportunity (AO) - each one with a different objective and target audience in mind:

The first one will solicit proposals from end-users* and enablers** to develop online regional atlases intended to increase the availability and use of distributed data content online.

The second AO will solicit proposals from data suppliers*** interested in publishing information and services to the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI). The goal here is to increase the amount of location-based data available through a distributed network relating to GeoConnections' four priority areas: public health, public safety, environment and sustainable development, and matters of importance to Aboriginal peoples.

The third AO will solicit proposals from governments, academia, non-government organizations, and the private sector to develop strategic and business plans for using the CGDI within organizations, and to define user requirements for online or standalone applications that leverage the CGDI.

The fourth AO will solicit proposals from end-users to develop online or standalone applications that leverage the CGDI and will enable decision-makers in the priority areas to access information in real time. This AO is intended for those who already have a solid understanding of user needs and who have a business case already developed for these applications.

Full details regarding these AOs will be posted to the Opportunities page as each opportunity is launched, and a notice will be sent out to stakeholders who have subscribed to the GeoConnections stakeholder mailing list.

CAD / GIS Integration... forever a headache!

Browsing some headlines this morning I once again came accross an interesting article describing a county's situation where city officials are still grappling with the problem of having an accurate, COMMON, digital base. They describe outdated and innacurate maps that are creating big head-aches for election officials, planners, and their e911 department... it's really amazing that these seemingly simple issues are creating so many problems when the solution really is simple. Spend some cash, update your basemaps (AS A STARTING POINT) and get your cAD and GIS people speaking the same language... ie. CAD/GIS integration. For more about Rhea County's (TN)problems see this article - maybe one of you can help these folks out!

GIS & Dive course... what a nice mix!

Here's a cool opportunity for someone with some EDU. budget to burn! How about an intro to GIS course coupled with a primer on diving (ya SCUBA)?

Geographer makes good and swaps oneredpaperclip for a house after 14 trades... how about oneyellowgarminGPS??

An interesting story you may have heard of a while back... For the price of a paper clip, Kyle MacDonald has hooked a new home. The 26-year-old University of B.C. geography graduate posted his first message at http://oneredpaperclip.com on July 12, 2005. He's now a couple of days away from completing his quest to trade one red paper clip for a house thanks to the city of Kipling, Saskatchewan

Everything started with the following blog post...

"Below is a picture of a paper clip," he wrote. "It is red . . . I
want to trade this paper clip with you for something bigger or better,
maybe a pen, a spoon, or perhaps a boot. If you promise to make the
trade I will come and visit you, wherever you are, to trade."

Two Vancouver girls swapped a fish-shaped pen for the paper clip. The pen was then exchanged for a doorknob. By Christmas he had a snowmobile. In the spring, he traded an afternoon with rock star Alice Cooper for a unique KISS snow globe. The ornament caught the eye of actor Corbin Bernsen, a snow-globe collector, who offered him a minor role in an upcoming movie. A few weeks ago, the town of Kipling upped the ante with the offer of a house. Says the mayor...

"We plan to hold an audition to determine who gets the role, and we
expect there will be a lot of people coming to town, spending money at
local businesses," she said.
See more about this interesting story at http://www.oneredpaperclip.com

So... you GIS dudes out there... I have a cool, never been used Garmin etrex GPS... care to make a trade?? Seriously... post an offer and I'll gladly cut a deal and so on and so on... maybe I can parlay this puppy into some spanky new office space in Denver, CO for GISuser.com! ;0)

Above is a picture of a garmin etrex GPS. It is yellow. . . I want to trade it for something bigger... maybe a PDA, some GIS data, a printer, a baseball card, a vacuum, or ???

Forget about the world cup... fly over all 20 legs of the tour de france race with google earth

Now that "the cup" is done with... talk about a lame finish... sports enthusiasts might want to track the tour de france using google earth with some very cool 3d fly-throughs. should i become a programmer??

Should I think about becoming a programmer? That's the lead-in to an article at the Guardian that cites the sector is "approaching meltdown" based on reent analysis. From the article... "headline numbers are that there has been a 50% drop in applications for computer-related degrees, a 60% drop in software engineering students and a 47% drop in systems engineering students."
