Access Google Maps Mobile from your mobile handset

Smartphone users can download Google maps mobile directly from www.google.com/gmm using their handset's web browser. And, coming soon, some devices are expected to ship with the application pre-configured on the device... case in point, the app will start shipping on BenQ-Siemens UMTS handsets beginning in June 2006. Google Maps is a free download that lets you find local hangouts and businesses across town or across the country — right from your phone. Please note, the app is free but carriers may charge data service rates for downloading and using the application. Google Maps works with most Java-enabled (J2ME) mobile phones offered by Cingular and Sprint, and all color BlackBerry devices regardless of carrier. At this time, Google Maps doesn't work with Nextel, T-Mobile USA or BREW-enabled phones (e.g. Verizon, Alltel, U.S. Cellular), or Palm devices. For a list of supported devices see http://www.google.com/gmm/devices.html

That's an old hat...

First of all google.maps is available for mobile devices for some months (you can even get it at handango.com).

Secondly the google.maps/earth projection is anything else but it is not as flexible as it presents itself. Also I don't like the fixed zoom levels of GM. Who are them to bound me in way of navigating within a map? ;) There has been some research on this so I found Spot for my BlackBerry (http://www.skylab-mobilesystems.com/en/products/spot_bb.html) which brings a Google.Maps layer just as an additional feature besides its WMS part. Waypoints and GPS stuff is also working...

Third, I hope BenQ-Siemens will improve their handsets as soon as possible. They are still extremely buggy - just tried the SXG75 and the menu crashed without any possibility for recovering. Just the "Windows-Procedure" helped: reboot. ;-)
