Gary Lang on why Autodesk took MapGuide to Open Source

Gary Lang of Autodesk just took to the stage here at Where 2.0 in a presentation titled ""Opening" the Possibilities: API's and Open Source Code ". Gary addressed the Where 2.0 crowd to describe why exactly the company would open source an 8 figure revenue generating piece of software. Regarding the migrating to open source, Lang points out that the path was enabled by the development of the OSGeo foundation (osgeo.org). What was the tipping point?
– standards (enabling ubiquity) -- Examples http -> apache and Gml, wms, wfs -> MapServer
- Interest in open source is growing and Google Earth bringing a solution to the masses (open APIs but when will ads start appearing) enter the enterprise licensing which will take care of this conern.
- Open source geospatial software standards – imagine, O’reilly now has 4 titles about Open Source!
So why Autodesk did it
- users wanted it (We’re too slow)
- makes business sense for MapGuide – a much bigger piece of revenues is derived from service work compared to software sales so it makes sense!
- makes business sense for Map
- makes business sense for TopoBase
Lang ended by noting that standard APIs create commodization opportunities for web mapping... makes sense to me! - for more on the latest from Autodesk this week see here
