Globals industrial coupons codes Pros and Cons of Gunite Pools Versus The Alternatives

, ,

Gunite is often one of the preferred construction materials for building pools, whether it is a swimming pool, spa area, garden fountain, waterfall or other landscaping water feature. However, when planning a water feature addition to your yard, it's important to weigh the pros and cons of all construction materials, in order to find the one that is best suited to any individual application.

Shape Flexibility

In terms of design flexibility, gunite is often the preferred choice, due to the fact that it can be used to create pools of any size or shape. Instead of the more standardized shapes and sizes that are available in other materials such as vinyl and fiberglass, gunite can be used to create pools in irregular shapes, which can fit into oddly shaped areas around the yard. Because of the ability to create irregular shapes, pools created with gunite often have a more natural appearance, which lets them blend in better with the yard's overall landscaping. It is also easy to add other types of water features to a gunite pool, such as custom steps or a waterfall. Custom finishes can be applied to a gunite pool, such as pebbles or plaster finishes, which can add a lot to the overall beauty and natural appearance of the pool, as opposed to the prefabricated appearance of vinyl and fiberglass pools. They can also be made in any size, as opposed to the size restrictions of pre-fabricated fiberglass pool.

Cost

In terms of cost, a gunite pool is one of the more high-end choices. Since other types of pools, such as vinyl or fiberglass come already pre-shaped, the cost of the pool itself can be much lower than building a gunite pool. The overall construction and labor costs for having a gunite pool built is also usually higher than installing a vinyl or fiberglass pool. However, due to it being a permanent structure, a gunite pool often provides a greater increase to the overall property value of a home, as opposed to other types of pools.

Speed of Installation

If speed of pool installation is a primary concern, a vinyl or fiberglass pool might be a better option. Both of these types of pools make use of pre-fabricated or preformed materials, which makes installation a much quicker process. A gunite pool must be individually created, and requires a process of digging a hole, adding the structural framework and then applying the gunite mix, after which it must be troweled and allowed to cure for about a week before the final finish can be applied.

Care and Maintenance

In terms of care and maintenance, although a gunite pool is very durable, it does require maintenance to keep the plaster surface in good repair, requiring the pool to be drained periodically. An acid washing is also generally necessary every few years, which can also help contribute to the need to eventually re-plaster the pool. The more uneven surface of a gunite pool can provide more opportunities for bacteria or algae to grow, so proper pool maintenance and care needs to be maintained. However, gunite is very durable, and isn't subject to the dangers of the liner tearing, as is the case with a vinyl liner pool.
