Xie, Ying (Peter)
Eng 101
OC -2

My name is Peter. I was raised in a small city, and finished my 3 years college in 1999 in Wuhan, where I was given birth. After graduation, I worked in Hangzhou for almost one year. In the July of 2000, I kissed my parents goodbye, and moved to Cambodia where I worked with a Taiwanese-owned garment factory as the shipping manager for six years. The choice I made was just for the sake of money, but my life therefore turned out to be an interesting story.

When I first got to Cambodia, this country was less developed yet very dangerous. Shortly after I’ve settled in this new place, my girlfriend dumped me and I lost my first love. In the factory where I worked, most of my Chinese co-workers were old enough to be my uncles and aunts, so I hardly could find anyone who has the similar interests to associate with and reduce my loneliness. Most of the time, the only entertainment for me was either to go out alone to buy drinks or just to glare at the sky from the little window at my bedroom. Two years later, terrible news arrived that my dad passed away in an accident. My heart was sinking and became stony. Almost everyday, after finishing my routine work, I sat alone, drinking alcohol with music, and my mind was full of all kinds of negative thoughts. I didn’t want to talk with anybody around me. I just felt the sky was both low and gray, and my young life was dying away.
In the October of 2003, I met Brother Lavon Day and his wife in a dinner, who then served as the mangers of the Customer Service Center in Cambodia Phnom Penh Mission. Brother Day left me his business card; and three months later, with little knowledge about what he was doing for, I called him twice, asking to “do some volunteer services for your church”. He later introduced me to two American Elders, whom gave me a Book of Mormon and started teaching me basic principles of restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. A few weeks later, I made a visit to Laos. I brought the Book of Mormon with me and read it in every minute that I had. After returning to Cambodia, I found that I loved the Book of Mormon even more. One night, I sat in my room alone and read 3 Nephi 12:15~16, which said “Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house; Therefore let your light to shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” While reading these verses, I felt that a refreshing breeze blew into my bosom, and piece by piece, my whole heart was lighted up. In the mean while, I had felt great peace and comfort which I never had felt since my dad left me, just one year before the time I was reading these verses. With my heart being softened and opened, I didn’t feel very negative about people and work. As the discussions went on, the Elders helped me better understand the Church and the restored Gospel. They also helped me build self-esteem and get rid of alcohol. Five months later after first meeting, on March.14, 2004, I was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

When I received baptism, I was the first person from Mainland China to join the Church in Phnom Penh. At first, I was under the 4th branch in which all the Sunday services were conducted in Cambodian language that I could only understand through an interpreter. However, two months later, an English speaking branch, the International Branch in Phnom Penh, was set up. So I went to the International Branch every Sunday ever since. It was a turning point for me. In the place where I could understand others and be understood by others, I was able to feast upon the words of Jesus Christ and meet a lot of good people from all over the world whose examples profoundly influenced my way of life for good. Realizing how blessed I was to find this true church and be a member, I started to learn how to appreciate all that I had. I found that the sky was gray no more, the people looked so nice and lovely, and all the creatures seemed vivid and meaningful to my life. Sometimes I felt that I had a desire to sing to the world about the happiness in my heart. Having kissed the dying Ying goodbye, I became a new person who was active both mentally and spiritually.

Two months after joining the International Branch, I started inviting my Chinese friends to come to investigate the Church by participating in the Sunday services. Later, I brought them to take part in missionary discussions. Like myself, quiet a few of my Chinese friends didn’t have any background about Christianity, and they tended to trust a friend’s experience rather than what the American missionaries told them; plus, some of them don’t speak very good English. Being the first Chinese member, I stayed there in the discussions to interpret the conversation, help my friends understand the gospel, and bear my testimony on how the gospel had changed my life. My friends and I worked in different factories in Phnom Penh; thusly most of the discussions had to take place at night. After I finished my work at 6pm, I rode my bicycle to the place where the missionaries and my friends met. And when the American Elders found someone who spoke Chinese and had interest in our church, they loved to phone me to offer a help in the lessons. Thus, I was pretty busy on my shabby bicycle every night, from Monday to Friday. My time and energy were taxed to the most in those difficult days, but I’ve never felt tired of it. And I think the teaching experience is one of the most wonderful memories in my lifetime.
Day in day out, eventually, our prayers was answered and our efforts paid off. In the following two years after I joined the Church, seven of my Chinese friends were touched by the Spirit and decided to join the Church, and I baptized 3 of them. One girl who was baptized by me, Joyce Qiao, became my girlfriend. She and I came to BYU-Hawaii in the April of 2006, and now she is on her mission in Oakland, California. My testimony grew very fast and so did my love to the Church.
For so many times, when I looked back to my life, I marveled at the miracles happened in my life since I’d joined the Church. This is the best choice I’ve made in my life.

I'll wait you out there in my eternal life.

Rosas--La Oreja De Van Gogh

http://computer.bisu.edu.cn/xuanxiu/stu/05_1/ZhouChen/mp3/ROSAS.mp3

Nos hemos cruzado, has decidido mirar,

Donde los viernes cada tarde, como siempre,
La esperanza dice "quieta, hoy quizás sí..."

Pasaron seis meses y me dijiste adiós,
Un placer coincidir en esta vida.

Y es que empiezo a sospechar
Que los demás son sólo para olvidar.

j'ai jamais vu d'amour fragile
j'ai toujours donne tout
toute seule au bout de moi
j't'envoie ces quelques mots
contre ta peau
quand on s'cachait pres des bateaux
pour mettr' nos corps a nu
c'est la vie qui grandit
on s'comprend pas toujours soi-même
et un jour
on aime
{refrain:}
oh non non non
on s'oublie pas comme ca
tu n'le sais pas
non non non
on n'oublie pas tout ca
c'est notre histoire d'amour
j'voudrai la vivre encore une fois
et face aux vagues de l'ocean
tu m'as tendue la main
pour m'emmener doucement
jusqu'au premier matin
j'avancais toujours vers toi
comme une etoile qui danse
et le ciel a mis ses ailes
pour me voler mon innocence
des regards qu'on garde en soi
des rires qu'on oublie pas
parce qu'un jour
on aime
{au refrain}
c'est la vie qui grandit
on s'comprend pas toujours soi-même
et un jour
on aime...
