Wyoming travel guide Inspired by the Legends at Wyoming Craft Fairs

, , ,

If you're one of those people with a fondness for myths and legends, then you'd probably have heard of the jackalope. It's essentially a cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope - a jackrabbit with antlers on top. The inspiration came from seeing jackrabbits that have horn-like tumors on their heads, but the creature is an interesting concept, nonetheless.

Wyoming has given claim that this amazing animal came from this state, when a local taxidermist stuffed and patched together one back in 1993. Now, the state has declared the jackalope to be its state mythical creature, continuing to inspire the craftspeople of Wyoming every day.

There are a lot of different jackalope varieties; there are the small jackrabbit sized ones, and there are the larger versions which can carry a fully-grown adult on its back. There's even one which had a jackrabbit head with antlers sewn onto a chicken body! The imagination really has no limits, and it will just fall onto the person to breathe life onto a concept.

For this reason, crafts in Wyoming continue to draw inspiration from the fabled jackalope. Taxidermists stitch them together from different animal parts to this day, woodcarvers still struggle on how to attach beautiful but fragile carved horns, and the image is very prominent in many other works.

Get your inspiration from the jackalope, and be able to make crafts based on this fabled creature! If you have the skills it takes to make crafts, try using the jackalope in your items and display your products at one of the fairs in Wyoming. You can also join craft fairs with other mixed animals as your theme; you don't have to limit yourself to our official creature, how about images of minotaurs or a flying hippogriff? Whatever you draw your inspiration from, let your imagination go to different places, and let your crafted works capture the images of these travails.
