Squeaky floor?

, , ,

One of my big pet peeves that's finally calling me to action is the sound of the squeaky floorboards near the sink area. Likely at some point in the house's history the kitchen was flooded somehow and now it's an everyday occurance. Squeak, squeak - every step. It's not so much that I'd like to play hide and seek and I'm being found out, but let's be serious. Who wants to live in a squeaky old building?

So looking into it, it looks like I've got two options. The first is to rip it all up. The tile near the sink, the linoleum around it, and get right down to the subflooring and tear that up as well. The subfloor is basically plywood so likely the reason why it's squeaky is that it's rotted and needs replacing. This would likely be the best avenue, but there's another way.

The other way involves simply buying new subflooring and linoleum and just blasting it right over top. Second layer adds thickness, but because of the weight dispersion effect, we should be able to get rid of most of the squeaking.

Either way it's a project that's going to take a weekend to maneuver. Looking forward to it actually. Except the price of the wood and flooring materials, but hey, that's another story. It'll be so good to replace that kitchen floor, I'm actually excited to get going. Have to let you know how it goes.

Chow for now!
