Metro Line 3 and 4 start operation

Line 3 and Line 4 start operation on December 30th, 2006. At that time Guangzhou's metro network will first break the 100-km mark by reaching 116 kilometers, ranking second across all regions in China (except Hong Kong).

Metro Line 1 Will Dispatch a Train Every Two Minutes

It is learned from Guangzhou Metro Corporation that Metro Line 1 will conduct a large adjustment to realize a running interval of 2 minutes a train for the next year, after Metro Lines 3 and 4 are put into service by the end of 2006.

Currently, the average traveling speed for Metro Lines 1 and 2 is 35 kilometers an hour. Metro Line 3 will practice the "Large Stations & Fast Trains" policy and its traveling speed will reach 55 kilometers an hour by the end of 2006, to improve the speed of Guangzhou's traffic. Its top speed can reach 120 kilometers an hour.

Trains Run Every 13 Minutes on Metro Lines 3 and 4

On December 26, Guangzhou Metro Company announced that the operation time will be 6: 00-22: 00 for No. 3 line and 6: 00-21: 30 for No. 4 line.

Trains are to run from eleven stations of No. 3 line and five stations of No. 4 line at 14:00, December 30. Citizens will be able to experience the 120 kilometers/hour speed of No. 3 line trains and enjoy the metropolitan scenery as they travel on the elevated section of No. 4 line.

According to statistics, after the launch of No. 2 line, passengers increased 30 percent on No. 1 line. Therefore, the launch of Metro line 3 and 4 lines is expected to increase the number of passengers on lines 1 and 2.

No. 4 line trains will feature linear motors. Due to complicated production processes, the production speed of the trains of Metro lines 3 and 4 is slower than the construction speed of tracks.

The train intervals will be about 13 minutes in the early stage and may be adjusted in the second half of 2007.

Tertiary industry development emphasized

On December 26, Mayor Zhang Guangning stated that the "central areas adjustment" strategy would play an important role in the development of Guangzhou city. The government will gradually optimize the industrial structure, adjust the population density and building density, and improve the infrastructure of old urban areas and people's life.

Mayor Zhang said that the strategy would promote the development of the central urban areas, namely the old urban areas, "it will be included in the government work report of the year 2007."

He explained that central areas adjustment means "the adjustment, optimization and improvement of the old urban areas".

"We should reserve the old urban areas that reflect the characteristics of Lingnan culture; at the same time development should not be ignored." Mayor Zhang said, "Improvements need to be made in the infrastructure of the old urban areas and the living environment of some residents."

"The tertiary industry will be the focus of the development of central urban areas. The government has closed 147 factories in the past years, and will close or move out 184 factories in the following two years that are not able to meet safety production requirements or environment protection requirements."

The Mayor said that Guangzhou will provide a more comfortable environment and more convenient transport means for people living in the old urban areas, to further improve the city's image.
