Writing the Abstract for Your Dissertation

You may be seeing a lot of tips and guidelines on how to write a dissertation title or how to write it entirely. There are even methods available on how to conduct research, how to create an analysis, and how to formulate a good conclusion. There is plenty of resources on these steps but how about for writing an abstract for your dissertation? Perhaps, yes but only few.

Though abstract is just a short summary of your research, its role is very important. It is actually an essential part of your dissertation as it is the first thing that your professor or an assessor will read. It is the determining factor if the reader will read your whole dissertation. Hence, it must be really good so that your professor will be impressed and get interested to your study.

In writing the abstract for your dissertation, you have to consider its size and structure. If you are writing a master thesis, the maximum number of words is 150 but if you are writing a dissertation specifically doctoral, the maximum is 350 words. Whether its 150 or 350 words, you must be able to reflect the structure of the entire dissertation and must mirror all its major elements- research problem, research requirements, research methods, findings, and recommendation.

You can start your abstract by stating the focus of your research and its purpose. Next thing to do is to highlight the focus of your study, summarize your findings, and include your main recommendation. If you do all of these, then you have an effective abstract.

Your abstract must be written well or else, your professor or the assessor will no longer bother to read the succeeding pages of your dissertation.
